She completed Antsla Secondary School in 1971. In 1976, she graduated from Tartu State University where she studied Estonian language and literature. From 1992\u20131995, Mariina Paesalu studied Finnish language and culture at Tallinn Pedagogical University. In 1976\u20132012, she worked as a teacher of Estonian language and literature at Varstu, Alatskivi, Saue and Lagedi. In 1989, Mariina Paesalu won the first place at the Estonian competition of dialect literature. She is a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 2018.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"line-height: 106%;\">H\u00e4nil\u00e4ne\u2019s earlier poetry was published under the name of Mariina Saaveli in the publications <i>Viruskundra<\/i> and <i>Eesti Kirik<\/i>. From 2005, she has published her poetry under the name of H\u00e4nil\u00e4ne in the V\u00f5ro-Seto calender and the journal <i>Looming<\/i>. In 2008, H\u00e4nil\u00e4ne won the Hendrik Adamson Award for poetry written in dialect with the poetry cycle <i>Ist\u00f5 inemine suurtii veeren<\/i> (\u2018Someone was Sitting Beside the Highway\u2019), and in 2009 she received the annual award of the journal Looming for her poetry cycle <i>T\u00f5s\u00f5 mu maailman<\/i> (\u2018Others in My World\u2019). H\u00e4nil\u00e4ne\u2019s debut collection <i>Ma p\u00fch\u00e4p\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4p\u00f5ll\u00f5 m\u00f5si<\/i> (\u2018I Washed My Sunday Apron\u2019, 2010) was nominated for the Betti Alver Debut Prize. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"line-height: 106%;\">The characteristic features of H\u00e4nil\u00e4ne\u2019s poetry are the rich dialect vocabulary, clarity of thought, sincerity and pictoriality of emotions. Along with nature, the writer observes politics and each year writes a poem which sums up Estonian life in an ironic key. To make H\u00e4nil\u00e4ne\u2019s poetry understandable for North Estonians, her books include a glossary and a CD with texts read by the author.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"line-height: 106%;\">Mariina Paesalu has been the editor of many books, particularly poetry collections and travel books.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"line-height: 106%;\">Her daughter Maarja Paesalu is a translator of literature written in Spanish.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"line-height: 106%;\"><i>L.
