\nJaan Tooming (28 March 1946 \u2013 5 April 2024) was a theatre director, actor and writer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tooming was born in Tallinn as the son of writer <\/span><\/span><\/span>Osvald Tooming<\/a><\/span><\/span>. Jaan Tooming completed Tallinn Secondary School No. 7 in 1964 and in 1968 graduated from Tallinn State Conservatoire in the speciality of drama.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From 1968\u20131969, he was an actor at the Estonian Youth Theatre, from 1969\u20132009, actor and director of the Vanemuine Theatre, from 1979\u20131983 also artistic director of the Ugala Theatre. In 1972\u20131976 and 1985\u20131989, Tooming (together with \u00dclo Vilimaa) taught the Vanemuine Theatre Studio. The main part of his creative activity was associated with Tartu. In 2005, Tooming founded the Sagar Sagitta Theatre.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He also directed plays in Finland and Germany, television plays (Eluj\u00f5gi<\/em> \u2013 \u2018River of Life\u2019, 1970; Ebajumal<\/em> \u2013 \u2018Idol\u2019, 1991) and films (V\u00e4rvilised unen\u00e4od<\/em> \u2013 \u2018Colourful Dreams\u2019, in cooperation with Virve Aruoja, 1975, Tallinnfilm; P\u00f5rgup\u00f5hja uus Vanapagan<\/em> \u2013 \u2018The Misadventures of the New Satan\u2019, 1978; Mees ja m\u00e4nd<\/em> \u2013 \u2018Man and Pine\u2019, 1980, both Eesti Telefilm) and played in films. Tooming was a member of the Estonian Theatre Union from 1977, Estonian Directors\u2019 and Dramaturgs\u2019 Union from 1993 and Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 2009 until his death. His brother was photographer Peeter Tooming, his son is philosopher Uku Tooming.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jaan Tooming\u2019s poems appeared under the pseudonym of Lapard in the journal Looming<\/em> from 1972. His first poetry collection Rist on kasvanud k\u00f5iksusest l\u00e4bi<\/em> (\u2018The Cross has Grown through the Universe\u2019) appeared in 1999. Works of literature in different styles and several genres followed: a \u201cnotebook novel\u201d, collections of poetry and essays. He published numerous articles on cultural themes and social criticism.\u00a0 Like his theatrical productions, his written texts are characterised by expressivity and revolt against everything low and mediocre. Jaan Tooming mentioned <\/span><\/span><\/span>Uku Masing<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u2019s strong influence on his creation and personality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2001, Tooming received the Order of the White Star, Class 4; in 2004, the year the Estonian National Culture Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award; in 2012, the Estonian National Lifetime Achievement Award for Culture.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
