Loone Ots <\/span>(until 1993 Kaust, b. 31. XII 1965) is an author and scholar of folklore and literature.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was born and educated in Tallinn and studied Estonian language and literature at the University of Tartu (graduated in 1990). At the university she obtained a master\u2019s degree in folklore studies (1993: \u201cDr. Oskar Kallas\u2019 life and work\u201d) and a doctorate in pedagogy (1999: \u201cA study package for multicultural education on the model of Estonian literature\u201d). She has been a lecturer in Baltic Studies at the University of Tartu and at the Tallinn Pedagogical University, and chief editor at the Maurus publishing house. She is a member of the Estonian Union of Stage Directors and Dramaturges, the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union and the Karl Ristikivi<\/a> Society. She has held the chair of the Richard Wagner Society in Tartu and the Estonian League for the Protection of Children. In the play competition run by the Estonian Theatre Agency she won a special mention for Koidula<\/a> veri <\/i>(\u2018Koidula\u2019s Blood\u2019) in 2005, Libahunt <\/i>(\u2018The Werewolf\u2019) in 2009 and Gerondid ehk L\u00f5pp <\/i>(\u2018The Old Farts, or The End\u2019) in 2015.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ots\u2019 range is wide: popular scientific literature, children\u2019s books, teaching materials, poetry, plays. She is more widely known for her plays with a historical and\/or cultural-historical background, which have been called pseudo-documentary dramas. Basing her works on facts, and skilfully using comic elements, she presents alternative, public-friendly versions of history and\/or cultural history. For instance, she has written about Jaan Poska, Jaan T\u00f5nisson, Karl Ristikivi (\u00dcksainus Araabia \u00f6\u00f6 \u2013 \u2018<\/i>One Single Arabian Night\u2019 -, Karl Ristikivi p\u00f5lev lipp, \u2018<\/i>Karl Ristikivi\u2019s Burning Flag\u2019). Birkenruh\u2019 episood <\/i>(\u2018The Birkenruh Episode\u2019) concentrates on the quartet of associates Carl Hacker, Friedebert Tuglas<\/a>, Artur Adson<\/a> and Marie Under<\/a> in summer 1917. Wider attention was paid to her first play, dealing the fixed myth about Koidula, Koidula veri<\/i> (2005), which is based on the claim by Juhan Liiv<\/a>, which was regarded as mad, that he was the progeny of Lydia Koidula and the Russian Tsar, and therefore the king of Poland.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ots\u2019 novel Armastus<\/em> (\u2018Love\u2019, 2021) is also a cultural history, in which the main character Salme Niilend, together with Uku Masing<\/a>, saves his fellow student, future theologian and folklorist Isidor Levin, from the Nazis during the German occupation of Estonia in 1942. Rein Sepp<\/a>, Kersti Merilaas<\/a>, Niilend\u2019s beloved Karl Ristikivi and other Estonian cultural figures also act in the background. The novel won first place in the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union\u2019s novel competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book of reminiscences Mustam\u00e4e valss <\/i>(\u2018Mustam\u00e4e Waltz\u2019, 2012), in the Petrone Print series \u2018Aja lood\u2019 (\u2018Stories of the Time\u2019) casts a look at the world of one suburb and its residents from the late sixties to the eighties. Against a background of images of the era and its conditions, laced with humour and satire, the development of one young person is revealed. In the successful \u2018My\u2026\u2019 series from the same publisher, Minu Odessa <\/i>(\u2018My Odessa\u2019, 2020) offers an insight into both the writer and Ukraine\u2019s culture and lifestyle.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
