VIII 1986) is a prose writer and literary scholar.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirikal has studied Spanish language and culture at the Universities of Tartu, Granada and Barcelona, \u200b\u200band defended a master\u2019s degree in literary studies at Tallinn University. She also defended her PhD at the same university with the thesis \u201c\u201dWhen I was broken open to life\u201d: the depiction of modern gender and body in <a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/s\/semper\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1826\">Johannes Semper<\/a>\u2018s pre-World War II work\u201d. Kirikal has worked as an assistant and teacher of Spanish at the University of Tartu; since 2026 she has been working as a senior researcher at the Under and Tuglas Literature Centre of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and head of the Department of Modern Literature, and as a researcher in literary studies at the Institute of World Languages \u200b\u200band Cultures of the University of Tartu. Kirikal\u2019s main research topics are related to modernism, feminism and body theories in the Estonian context, analyzing, for example, the work of Johannes Semper, Marta Lepp alias Sophia Vardi, Alma Ostra and <a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/k\/ainokallas\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1388\">Aino Kallas<\/a>. She has written literary criticism, focusing mainly on modern Estonian literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 108%;\">Her first book, <i>\u00dche maailmavalutaja m\u00e4rkmed <\/i>(\u2018Notes from a Weltschmerz Sufferer\u2019, 2012), which concentrates on a young woman\u2019s interior world, is striking in its stylised, sometimes rampant, \u2018aerobatic\u2019 use of language. The short story <i>S\u00fc\u00fc <\/i>(\u2018Guilt\u2019, 2012) and some prose-poems (2017) appeared in the journal <i>V\u00e4rske R\u00f5hk<\/i>, the short story <i>Sulge uks vaikselt<\/i> (\u2018Close the Door Quietly\u2019, 2016) in <i>Looming<\/i> and the story <em>Vahehetk<\/em> (\u2018The In-between Moment\u2019) in the collection Eesti novell 2024 (\u2018Estonian Short Story, 2024\u2019.).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 108%;\"><i>A.
