{"id":2067,"date":"2024-04-03T23:42:26","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T20:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/olesk\/"},"modified":"2024-09-11T11:19:38","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T08:19:38","slug":"olesk","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/o\/olesk\/","title":{"rendered":"Peeter Olesk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br>Peeter Olesk (25 December 1953 \u2013 25 November 2021) was a literary scholar and politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olesk was born and attended school in Tallinn and graduated from Tartu State University as an Estonian philologist. He worked as a teacher, as an editor in the publishing house Eesti Raamat, in the Estonian Literary Museum, being its director from 1990\u20131993, and as a lecturer at the University of Tartu. Olesk was also the director of the University of Tartu Library from 1995\u20131999, a member of the General Committee of Estonian Citizens, Tartu City Council and the 9th Parliament of Estonia, Minister of Population and Minister of Culture and Education, and advisor to the Rector of the University of Tartu and the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Olesk was a member of the Estonian Students\u2019 Society, the Council of the National Opera, the Board of Elders of the Estonian Defence League, the Estonian Literary Society and, from 1986, of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union. Olesk was awarded the Order of the Defence Forces of Estonia, the Order of the White Star, 3rd Class, (2001), was elected an honorary member of the Estonian Literary Society and an honorary citizen of the city of San Bernardino in California, USA. His wife was literary scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/o\/sirjeolesk\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2073\">Sirje Olesk<\/a> (born 1954).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olesk published articles on literary issues as early as in his school days. From the mid-1970s, he was a prolific and versatile columnist and critic, and later a lecturer. Olesk\u2019s writings stand out for their erudition, factual accuracy and firm judgments. He compiled, for example, <em>Gustav Suitsu autobiograafilisi m\u00e4rkmeid<\/em> (\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/s\/suits\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1522\">Gustav Suits<\/a>\u2019s Autobiographical Notes\u2019, 1987) published in the <em>Litteraria<\/em> series of source materials of Estonian literary history. Together with <a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/r\/runnel\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1655\">Hando Runnel<\/a>, he compiled the collection of G. Suits\u2019s articles <em>Vabaduse v\u00e4raval<\/em> (\u2018At the Gate of Freedom\u2019) published in the series <em>Eesti m\u00f5ttelugu<\/em> (\u2018History of Estonian Thought\u2019) in 2002. He gathered the articles and reviews by Karl Muru, a poetry researcher and long-time head of the Department of Estonian Literature at the University of Tartu into the collection <em>Luuleseletamine<\/em> (\u2018Poetry Explanation\u2019, 2001). A collection of Paul Ariste\u2019s articles compiled by Olesk, <em>S\u00f5nalaenul\u00f5bu<\/em> (\u2018The Fun of Borrowing Words\u2019, 2010), was published in the series <em>Eesti m\u00f5ttelugu.<\/em> He also edited and wrote the afterword for P. Ariste\u2019s <em>Vadja p\u00e4evikud 1942\u20131980<\/em> (\u2018Votic Diaries\u2019) published in the <em>Litteraria<\/em> series in 2005. In addition, he wrote afterwords or forewords for several books, for example: Harald Peep\u2019s <em>Nii et suled lendavad<\/em> (\u2018Ruffling the Feathers\u2019, 2001), <a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/s\/schultzbertram\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1537\">Georg Julius von Schultz-Bertram<\/a>\u2019s <em>Balti idealisti kirjad emale<\/em> (\u2018The Baltic Idealist\u2019s Letters to His Mother\u2019, published in the series <em>Eesti m\u00f5ttelugu<\/em> in 2004), <a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/v\/veidemann\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1076\">Rein Veidemann<\/a>\u2019s <em>Eesti kirjanduse m\u00f5te<\/em> (\u2018The Idea of Estonian Literature\u2019, 2021), Marju Lepaj\u00f5e\u2019s <em>Roomlaste taltsutamine<\/em> (\u2018The Taming of the Romans\u2019, 2011), <a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/h\/karlaugusthindrey\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1926\">Karl August Hindrey<\/a>\u2019s novel <em>Aovalged aknad<\/em> (\u2018Windows at Dawn\u2019, 1994), Aarne Vinkel\u2019s <em>August M\u00e4lk: \u00fclevaade elust ja loomingust<\/em> (\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/m\/malk\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1552\">August M\u00e4lk<\/a>: an Overview of His Life and Creation\u2019, 1997) and Rudolf P\u00f5ldm\u00e4e\u2019s <em>Vennastekoguduste kirjandus<\/em> (\u2018Literature of Moravian Brethren\u2019, published in the series <em>Eesti m\u00f5ttelugu<\/em> in 2011). Various essays and articles by Olesk himself have been gathered into the collection <em>Filoloogia t\u00f5eline t\u00e4hendus<\/em> (\u2018The True Meaning of Philology\u2019, 2008).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colleagues, friends and companions\u2019 reminiscences about Peeter Olesk have been published in the book <em>Meie Peeter<\/em> (\u2018Our Peeter\u2019, 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A.
