She has worked for several press publications, been an editor on television, later a freelancer. She is a member of the Estonian Association of Journalists and from 2002 a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">From the second half of the 1970s, Hellerma has published criticism and articles, from the early 1990s fiction in the press. As characteristic of Hellerma, her debut novel <em>Alkeemia<\/em> (\u2018Alchemy\u2019, 1997) concentrates on the theme of the woman and her viewpoints, analysing the man-woman relations against the background of social changes in the 1990s. A sensitive female character who struggles with both personal and social relations can be found in the novel <em>Kassandra<\/em> (\u2018Cassandra\u2019, 2000). Hellerma\u2019s third novel <em>Koer ja kuu ehk Seitse p\u00e4eva jaanuaris<\/em> (\u2018The Dog and the Moon or Seven Days in January\u2019, 2018) takes a look at the life of four people in the early 2010s. The novel entwines reality and unreality, explores collective and individual memory.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">The problems of being a woman, relations between men and women, acute observation and analysis of the society also occupy the central place in Hellerma\u2019s short prose, for example, in the collections <em>Ma armastasin David Copperfieldi<\/em> (\u2018I Loved David Copperfield\u2019, 2007) and <em>Unen\u00e4oliiv<\/em> (\u2018Dream Sand\u2019, 2011). A story from the latter, <em>M\u00e4ngumeri<\/em> (\u2018Toy Sea\u2019) received the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/g\/augustgailit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/g\/augustgailit\">August Gailit<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"> Short Story Award in 2013. The prose collection <em>\u00dcks p\u00e4ev minu ema elust<\/em> (\u2018One Day from My Mother\u2019s Life\u2019, 2021) is based on autobiographical material from the author\u2019s childhood and youth, but it also looks at present-day themes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Her travelogues have been collected into books written at writers\u2019 residential centres, <em>Sinine missa<\/em> (\u2018Blue Mass\u2019, 2008) and <em>Islandi kiri<\/em> (\u2018Letter from Iceland\u2019, 2014). Travelling and living at different places and environments have also provided inspiration for internal journeys and sharp-sighted reflections typical of Hellerma.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Social and cultural criticism, pictures capturing the era and language rich in images are also characteristic of Hellerma\u2019s poetry. Her first poetry collection <em>Seniitvalgus<\/em> (\u2018Zenith Light\u2019) appeared in 2014, and new collections have followed almost every year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Literary criticism and essays have been published in the collections <em>Kohanenud kirjandus<\/em> (\u2018Accustomed Literature\u2019, 2006), <em>Avanenud ruum<\/em> (\u2018Opened Space\u2019, 2006) and <em>Medusa juuksed<\/em> (\u2018Medusa\u2019s Hair\u2019, 2018). In criticism, too, her own theme is predominant \u2013 the central place belongs to the problems of women, society and cultural criticism, changes in time and value judgments, and maladjustment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">In 1994, Hellerma received the film criticism award of the journal <em>Teater. Muusika.
