VII 1944) is a stage director and writer, known chiefly as a collector of Estonian biographies and\u00a0by\u00a0the written and staged works based on them. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">She was born in Harju county, was educated in Tallinn, and studied stage direction from 1961 to 1963 at Viljandi Secondary School\u00a0of Culture, from 1968 to 1972 Estonian philology at Tartu State University, while working at the same time in a sociological laboratory\u00a0of the university, and from 1972 to 1976 in the Drama Faculty of the Tallinn State Conservatoire. She got her master\u2019s degree from the Tallinn Pedagogical University in 1999. She has worked as a director at the Estonian Drama Theatre and the Youth Theatre. She also worked as a lecturer at\u00a0the Drama Faculty of the Tallinn State Conservatoire\u00a0(later renamed as Drama School of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre), the Tallinn Pedagogical University and the Viljandi Culture\u00a0College, and also as Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of Tartu (in 2014). <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">With her debut play, <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">K\u00f5ik oleneb meist <\/span><\/i>(\u2018It All Depends on Us\u201d, 1966), Karusoo\u2019s name became linked primarily to sociological theatre, and various documentary projects. In the late eighties Karusoo was one of the initiators of the campaign to collect Estonian biographies, which turned into hugely popular\u00a0nationwide project. In her own theatrical work Karusoo has used the concept of memory and biographical theatre; her productions are mostly based on interviews or other documentary materials (letters, diaries &amp;c.). For example, the basis of <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Ma olen 13-aastane <\/span><\/i>(\u2018I Aam 13 Years Old\u2019, 1981)\u00a0are texts by schoolchildren. In her depiction of the world of the young, she is also reflecting society and its problems. The experience of one generation is also projected in <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Meie elulood <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Our Life Stories\u2019, 1982), <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Kui ruumid on t\u00e4is<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(\u2018When the Rooms Are Full\u2019, 1982), <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">T\u00e4na me ei m\u00e4ngi <\/span><\/i>(\u2018We\u2019re Not Playing Today\u2019, 2006). Amorous and sexual experiences from different times and generations are represented in <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Kured l\u00e4inud, kurjad ilmad <\/span><\/i>(\u2018The Cranes Are Gone, the Weather\u2019s Bad\u2019, 1997), and <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">K\u00fc\u00fcdipoisid <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Deporting Boys\u2019, 1999) which tells of the deportations from the deporters\u2019 viewpoint. Karusoo has also staged the stories of several cultural figures from Estonian history, such as Katrin Saukane\u2019s plays about Marie Under (<i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Under<\/span><\/i>, 2006)\u00a0and Betti Alver and Heiti Talvik (<i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">V\u00f5lg <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u2013 \u2018<\/span><\/i>Debt\u2019 -,\u00a02007), and the jointly written work <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Laul, mis j\u00e4\u00e4b <\/span><\/i>(\u2018The Song That Remains\u2019, 2014) about the composer Raimond Valgre, and Andrus Kivir\u00e4hk\u2019s <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Panso <\/span><\/i>(2007) about the legendary stage director\u00a0Voldemar Panso.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Karusoo has published books about Panso and was also one of the editors of Panso\u2019s diaries (I-II, 2007). Karusoo\u2019s scripts of the staged biographies are collected in <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Kui ruumid on t\u00e4is: Eesti rahva elulood teatritekstides 1982-2005 <\/span><\/i>(\u2018When the Rooms Are Full: The Estonian People\u2019s Life-stories in Play-scripts 1982-2005\u2019, 2008). A selection of her essays, speeches and thoughts from the years 1985 to 2019 is presented in <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Tunnistamisi <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Testimonies\u2019, 2019).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Merle Karusoo has been granted various prizes and awards: the Ants Lauter Prize (1980), the Juhan Smuul prize for the play <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Ma olen 13-aastane<\/span><\/i>, the Jakob Hurt prize (1989), the title of Merited Artist of the ESSR (1990), the Estonian Theatre Union\u2019s annual prize for a new theatre founder (1991), the annual prize of the Estonian Cultural Foundation (1993), the Estonian National Cultural Award (1998, 2007 and a lifetime achievement award in 2018), the Priit P\u00f5ldroos prize (1998), the Literature Endowment Annual Award for <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Misjon\u00e4rid <\/span><\/i>(\u2018The Missionaries\u2019, 2005), the Order of the White Star,\u00a0Class IV (2001), and the Virumaa Literary\u00a0Prize for <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">Kui ruumid on t\u00e4is<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u00a0(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">in <\/span>2008).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">A.
