Raimo M\u00e4nnis (16 XII 1931 \u2013 1 III 2025) was a prose and children\u2019s writer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was born in Viljandi County, went to school at Kildu, V\u00e4inj\u00e4rve, Kirivere and V\u00e4ndra and, from 1952\u20131957, studied at the Estonian Agricultural Academy, graduating from it as a mechanical engineer. He held several jobs in agriculture and technology. He was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1965\u20131990 and the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1991 until his death.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He entered literature with children\u2019s stories in 1954, after which he published the collections S\u00fcnnip\u00e4evakink<\/i> (\u2018Birthday Present\u2019, 1965) and Poiss ja kuu<\/i> (\u2018Boy and Moon\u2019, 1969). The youths of a post-war country school are depicted in the story Kivik\u00fcla kooli poisid<\/i> (\u2018Boys of Kivik\u00fcla School\u2019, 1974) and its sequel Talv ja kevad Kivik\u00fclas<\/i> (\u2018Winter and Spring at Kivik\u00fcla\u2019, 2018).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e4nnis\u2019 novels Vale\u00fchendused<\/i> (1983), Heinatants<\/i> (\u2018Hay Dance\u2019, 1985, 3rd<\/sup> place in the novel competition of 1985), Tagasi\u00e4rastaja<\/i> (\u2018Reverse Privatiser\u2019, 1997) and \u00c4rap\u00f6\u00f6ramiste aasta<\/i> (\u2018Year of Turnings Away\u2019, 2006) are also centred on the problems of country life in different periods. They show his good story-telling skills and competence in the theme.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
