He matriculated in 1966 from Paide secondary school and in 1973 graduated from Tartu State University in English philology. After leaving university he started work in the library of Tartu State University. From 1975 to 1977 Raudam worked in the Tallinnfilm studios as a feature film editor; from 1992 to 1993 in the library of the Academy of Sciences and from 1993 to 1994 as a literary consultant to the Estonian Drama Theatre. From 1994 to 1997 he worked on the culture desk of the newspaper Postimees. Since 1997 he has been a freelance author. Toomas Raudam’s maternal grandfather was the artist August Roosileht; his aunt was the artist Helve Viidalepp.

Raudam began with short stories published in 1968 in the magazine Noorus. His debut in book form came with Anti jutud (‘Anti Stories’) in 1983. His story ‘Lodus tiivad’ (‘Limp Wings’), in the collection Igavene linn (‘Eternal City’, 1988) won Raudam the Friedebert Tuglas short story prize in 1989. Raudam is one of the most sensitive to style of Estonian writers. His sentences are often long and complex. Through associations and intertextuality he weaves his own excursions of memory into the broader fabric of world literature. He uses unexpected similes and metaphors. At the centre of his works is mostly his own life, especially his childhood and youth in small-town Estonia in the post-war years, his university studies, illness, family incidents, cultural ventures shared with his friends.

The novel Tarzani seiklused Tallinnas (‘Tarzan’s Adventures in Tallinn’, 1991), is a parody, full of joyful play at every level of the text: the subject matter, which takes place in Tallinn in 1968, offers every possible version of the Tarzan myth. This work won him the 1991 prize for the best novel of the year, awarded by the Estonian Writers’ Union.

Raudam has written essays and stories about Modernist writers (Proust, Joyce, Kafka and others) and about classics of rock music (in the collection Tänulikud surnud, ‘The Grateful Dead’, 2005). One of his most remarkable essays is Teie (‘You’, 2003). In this essay the author discusses how to appreciate the unique suggestive power of Marcel Proust’s works. Raudam debates with several literary scholars who have concentrated on Proust. For comparison, attention is also paid to the uniqueness of James Joyce’s work. In this book of essays the boundary between the literary and the theoretical approach remains excitingly elusive. In 2003 this work was awarded the annual prize of the Literature Endowment.

Raudam’s work also includes film-scripts, some of which have won international awards. For example, the joint Estonian-Latvian film Head käed (Good hands), directed by Peeter Simm, won the Golden Olive Tree award at the Festival of European Cinema held at Lecce, Italy in 2002. Raudam also won a separate prize for the script at the festival.

Raudam has written a lot of commentaries on current affairs, prose and film criticisms, and introductions to foreign literature.

L.
