II 1928 – 9. VII 1996) was an Estonian children’s writer and translator, whose works include numerous stories for children of different ages, mostly younger and primary-school children. He was one of the most productive Estonian children’s authors, whose tales contain plenty of imagination and humour, intertwining adventurousness with social, ecological and everyday problems. He is one of the most translated Estonian writers.

Raud was born in Tartu, the son of the writer Mart Raud and the kindergarten teacher Lea Nurkse, who later also wrote poems for children. He attended several schools in Tallinn and Tartu and the Tallinn Teachers’ Seminary. From 1947 to 1952 he studied at Tartu State University, from which he graduated in Estonian philology. From 1952 to 1956 he worked in the Fr. R. Kreutzwald State Library as an instructor in children’s literature, and from 1956 to 1965 at the Estonian State Publishing House (from 1964 Eesti Raamat) as an editor of children’s literature. Later he worked as a freelance writer. Raud was a member of the Writers’ Union from 1963. He was the husband of the children’s author Aino Pervik, and father of the authors Rein Raud, Mihkel Raud and Piret Raud. Raud’s work has been recognized with various prizes, among them the State Prize of the Soviet Estonia (1970) and the Juhan Smuul Prize (1980); in 1978 he received the title of Merited Writer of the Estonian SSR. In 1974 Eno Raud was entered in the roll of honour of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY); his works have been translated into many languages.

Raud’s first children’s book Nii või naa (‘This Way or That Way’) appeared first in a Russian translation in Moscow, and in Estonian in 1957. There followed realistic stories that were inspired by children’s games, Roostevaba mõõk (‘The Stainless Sword’, 1957), Sõjakirves on välja kaevatud (‘The Battle-axe is Dug Up’, 1959) and the collection for little children Mõru kook (‘The Bitter Cake’, 1959) among others. Raud’s best-known works were the Sipsik (Raggie) stories with fairy-tale elements – Sipsik (‘Raggie’, 1962, in English 1969), Anu ja Sipsik (‘Anu and Raggie’, 1970) – and the Naksitrallid (‘Three Jolly Fellows’) series, which depicts the adventures of three creatures with human characteristics, but markedly different: Muhv, Kingpool and Sammalhabe (Muff, Halfshoe and Mossbeard). The Naksitrallid books are Naksitrallid I-II (‘Three Jolly Fellows’ I-II, 1972-1975, in English 1982-1983), and Jälle need naksitrallid I-II (‘Three Jolly Fellows’ III-IV, 1979-1982, in English 1983-1985). Raud also published many short stories and children’s poems full of word-play, and retellings of folklore for children (the prose version of Kalevipoeg, 1961, among others), as well as travelogues, children’s plays, film scripts – Tuli öös (‘Fire in the night’), Naksitrallid and others – and compiled collections of children’s literature: Kirju-Mirju (I-II 1969-1974). For adults he wrote the novels Etturid (‘Pawns’, 1968) about the anti-Soviet guerrillas or ‘forest brothers’, and Puujumal (‘Wooden God’, 1971), which discusses the fate of small indigenous ethnic groups.

M.
