In 1941 he was deported together with family. Having returned to Estonia, he completed secondary school in Tartu in 1947, from 1948\u20131952 studied at the Lunacharsky State Institute for Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow. Thereafter, he was a professional writer in Tallinn, a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1974. From 1989\u20131994, he was chairman of Kupar publishing company, from 1993 proprietor of Kuldsulg publishing company. Luik died in Tallinn and was buried in Tartu.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">At the beginning of his literary career, Luik wrote children\u2019s stories, which he published in the magazine <em>Pioneer<\/em> from 1966. The nonfiction books from the 1960s, deal with medical (<em>Inimene v\u00f5idab surma<\/em> \u2013 \u2018Humans Win Death\u2019, 1967) and educational issues (<em>K\u00f5ik noored orbiidile!<\/em>\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018All Young People into the Orbit\u2019, 1967).\u00a0 The novel <em>Kosmodroomidest kaugel<\/em> (\u2018Far from Cosmodromes\u2019, 1969), which won an incentive prize at the novel competition of 1967, concentrates on characters from a truck fleet; <em>Keelatud vili<\/em> (\u2018Forbidden Fruit\u2019, 1989) weighs the problems of scientists\u2019 responsibility.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">The double play <em>Kaks kuulsat kurjategijat<\/em> (\u2018Two Famous Criminals\u2019) with subtitles <em>H\u00fcvasti, mu kallid!<\/em> (\u2018Good-bye My Dear Ones!\u2019) and <em>Homme \u00e4rkad sa kuulsana<\/em> (\u2018Tomorrow You\u2019ll Wake up Famous\u2019) was staged at the Estonian Drama Theatre in 1969. It is based on ancient plots about Socrates and Herostratus. The play <em>Homsed t\u00e4hed<\/em> (\u2018Tomorrow\u2019s Stars\u2019, 1971) on the themes of the October Revolution and Lenin attracted wider attention and was also staged outside Estonia. Twists and turns in young people\u2019s lives and their choices are depicted in the plays <em>Ja see poiss olen mina?<\/em> (\u2018And This Boy is Me?\u2019), <em>Striptiis eriravilas<\/em> (\u2018Striptease at a Special Hospital\u2019) and <em>Poiss p\u00f5leval laevalael<\/em> (\u2018Boy on the Burning Ship Deck\u2019), which appeared in the collection Eesti <em>n\u00e4idendeid 1980\u20131984<\/em> (\u2018Estonian Plays 1980\u20131984\u2019, 1987). He has also written radio plays. Based on his play <em>T\u00f5e hetk<\/em> (\u2018Moment of Truth\u2019), he wrote the script for the film <em>Kuldrannake<\/em> (\u2018Golden Beach\u2019, 2006, director J\u00fcri Sillart) and has been the (co)scriptwriter of some other films.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Luik wrote literary, theatre and film criticism and translated prose and plays from Russian and English; he also wrote prefaces or afterwords for many translations. Luik\u2019s translations include Ray Bradbury\u2019s Fahrenheit 451, Bram Stoker\u2019s Dracula, Vladimir Nabokov\u2019s Lolita and many Russian classics (Turgenev, Chekhov, Herzen, and others).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Hans Luik\u2019s three-volume book of memories <em>Minu imeline elu<\/em> (\u2018My Wonderful Life\u2019) was published in 2009\u20132011.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">A.
