IX 1929 \u2013 29. X 2007) was a literary researcher and prose writer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%;\">He was born in Tartu County. He studied in Otep\u00e4\u00e4; then at Tartu State University, where he spent a year in 1948 at the law department, after which he studied Estonian Philology at the history and language department from 1948-1953, graduating with a specialization in Estonian literature. From 1953-1956, he finished his postgraduate studies at the Institute of Language and Literature. His master\u2019s thesis was <i>Raimond Kolga elul\u00e4ik ja looming <\/i>(\u2018The Life and Works of Raimond Kolk\u2019, 1993, Tallinn Pedagogical University) and PhD\u2019s was <i>V\u00e4liseesti kirjanduse vaatlusi<\/i> (\u2018Observations of Expatriate Estonian Literature\u2019, 1996, The University of Tartu). He held several positions: a researcher at the Institute of Language and Literature, an editor of Looming magazine, the director of P\u00e4rnu Drama Theatre, a literary consultant of the Tallinn Writers\u2019 Union, an editor at Eesti Raamat publishing house, and a lecturer at Tallinn Pedagogical University. He became a member of the Writers\u2019 Union in 1970 and of the Estonian Literary Society in 1993; from 1960-1992, he was a member of the Estonian Theatre Society. He was given the Estonian Arts Foundation award (1995), the Order of the White Star, Medal Class (2001) and the Bernard Kangro Literary Prize (2003) for the novel <i>Bernard Kangro eluk\u00e4ik ja looming<\/i> (\u2018The Life and Works of Bernard Kangro\u2019). He passed away in Tallinn and is buried at Metsakalmistu (Forest Cemetery).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%;\">As a writer, he debuted with poetry. His first book was the collection <i>Ma tulen Otep\u00e4\u00e4lt<\/i> (\u2018I Come from Otep\u00e4\u00e4\u2019, 1962), which was followed by <i>R\u00e4ndaja purdel<\/i> (\u2018Traveler on a Footbridge\u2019, 1977). His writings (and literary criticism) started being published in magazines in the late 1940s. The majority of his works is prose: for example, the short story collections <i>Tabamatu armastus<\/i> (\u2018Elusive Love\u2019, 1975), <i>Juhusliku paari m\u00e4ng<\/i> (\u2018The Game of a Chance Couple\u2019, 1979), <i>Loobumised<\/i> (\u2018Surrenders\u2019, 1980); the novels <i>\u00c4rkamised<\/i> (\u2018Awakenings\u2019, 1984) and <i>Naiselikkuse seadus <\/i>(\u2018The Law of Femininity\u2019, 1986) and the composite novel <i>Armastus v\u00f5\u00f5ras linnas<\/i> (\u2018Love in a Strange Town\u2019, 1994). His books often have a background in history, literature, or culture, for example the novel based on real events <i>Aeg atra seada<\/i> (\u2018Time to Prepare\u2019, 1986), which depicts the life of Mart Mitt, a leading figure of Estonian national awakening. The novel <i>Vabak\u00e4iguvang<\/i> (\u2018Prisoner on Work Release\u2019, 2004) focuses on the communist writer Valter Kaaver. The collection <i>M\u00e4lestusi eelmistest eludest<\/i> (\u2018Memoirs of Past Lives\u2019, 1998) includes stories based on literary and cultural history.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"et-EE\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.21cm;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%;\">Kruus\u2019 style is characterized by detailed literary and cultural forays and ideas \u2013 both as a writer and literary researcher. Kruus was an intense collector of factual materials during his life, especially of those concerning the lives of writers. His article collection <i>Naine hanesulega<\/i> (\u2018Woman with a Quill\u2019, 1971) focuses on female writers; <i>Apokriiva lood eesti akadeemilise kirjandusloo juurde<\/i> (\u2018Apocryhpa Stories to Accompany Estonian Academic Literary History\u2019, 1983) collects literary stories; <i>Eestiga s\u00fcdames v\u00f5\u00f5rsil<\/i> (\u2018Abroad with Estonia at Heart\u2019, 1996) features articles on expatriate literature. He has authored several (short) monographs, for example <i>Jakob M\u00e4ndmets <\/i>(1961), <i>Hella Wuolijoki<\/i> (1999), <i>Juhan S\u00fctiste eluk\u00e4ik ja looming<\/i> (\u2018The Life and Works of Juhan S\u00fctiste\u2019, 2000), <i>Bernard Kangro eluk\u00e4ik ja looming<\/i> (\u2018The Life and Works of Bernard Kangro\u2019, 2003), <i>Karl August Hindrey eluk\u00e4ik ja looming<\/i> (\u2018The Life and Works of Karl August Hindrey\u2019, 2003). He was a co-author of academic Estonian literary research and of several reference books, including the compiler and editor of <i>Eesti kirjarahva leksikon<\/i> (\u2018The Lexicon of Estonian Literature\u2019, 1995).
