May 1975) is a children\u2019s writer and activist of V\u00f5ro language (spoken in South Estonia) and culture.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Laan was born in V\u00f5ru. In 1993, she completed V\u00f5ru Kreutzwald Gymnasium and, in 2018, graduated from the University of Tartu with a master\u2019s degree in culture management. She has worked at the V\u00f5ru Institute and been the chairperson of the board of the V\u00f5ru Society (V\u00f5ru Language and Culture Foundation). Triinu Laan joined the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union in 2021.<br>\u00a0<br>Laan has published bilingual books for children with parallel texts in Estonian and V\u00f5ru, <em>Suur must koer. Suur must pini<\/em> (\u2018Big Black Dog\u2019, 2007, under the name of Triinu Ojar), <em>Vana katkine kass. Vana katskin\u00f5 kass<\/em> (\u2018Old Broken Cat\u2019, 2016) and <em>Krutskiline tita. P\u00e4\u00e4h\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4v tita<\/em> (\u2018Mischievous Baby\u2019, 2019). The book <em>Luukere Juhani juhtumised<\/em> (2020, published in English as \u2018John the Skeleton\u2019 in 2024) is in Estonian, but some of its characters \u2013 granny and grandpa \u2013 speak the V\u00f5ro language. It tells the story of a skeleton sent to retirement from anatomy class. Grandpa, who is living in a farmhouse near the forest, repairs the skeleton, who unexpectedly comes to life. <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>Luukere Juhani juhtumised<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> has proven very popular and has been translated into many languages. It has won numerous awards both in Estonia (Tartu Children\u2019s Literature Award, Nukits Prize) and abroad (e.g. Batchelder Award in the USA, 2025; Andersen Award in Italy, 2025; Kirkus Prize in the USA, finalist, 2025). VAT Theatre in Tallinn has made it into a theatre production (2026). Laan\u2019s <em>Poiss ja Papa<\/em> (\u2018Boy and Papa\u2019, 2024) won the Literature Endowment Annual Award.<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Laan\u2019s storytelling manner is distinct, amiably simple and natural. She is not afraid of dealing with serious topics like old age and death.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Triinu Laan\u2019s lyrics have been sung at the V\u00f5ro-language song festival Uma Pido (\u2018Our Own Festival\u2019) and by several artists, for example Mari Kalkun.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\"><em>L.
