He has upgraded his education at Indiana University in Bloomington in the USA, lectured at several universities, worked for the literary journal <em>Vikerkaar<\/em>, being its chief editor from 1995. V\u00e4ljataga has been a member of the supervisory board of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia and its Literature Endowment, of the Cultural Foundation of the President of the Republic of Estonia and of the Estonian Public Broadcasting Council. A member of Tartu Young Authors\u2019 Association, Wellesto literary association and the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union (from 1992).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">V\u00e4ljataga entered literature in the 1980s with poetry translations and poems published in the press. His first collection <em>Teine keel<\/em> (\u2018Another Language\u2019) appeared in the poetry cassette <em>Kassett \u201888<\/em> (\u2018Cassette \u201888) together with <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/s\/sinijarv\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/s\/sinijarv\" title=\"\">Karl Martin Sinij\u00e4rv<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/t\/trubetsky\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/t\/trubetsky\" title=\"\">T\u00f5nu Trubetsky<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/r\/ringvee\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/r\/ringvee\" title=\"\">Ringo Ringvee<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"> in 1989. His poetry follows the rules of poetics and is noticeable for its intellectuality. The poetic and technical potential of poetry is combined in the experimental sonnet machine <em>Sada tuhat miljardit millenniumisonetti<\/em> (\u2018A Hundred Thousand Billion Millennial Sonnets\u2019, 2000).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">V\u00e4ljataga is notable as a fruitful translator mainly from English; he is exacting in both form and content. He has translated into Estonian W. H. Auden\u2019s, Charles Baudelaire\u2019s, W. B. Yeats\u2019, Bertolt Brecht\u2019s, Ted Hughes\u2019 and Jaan Kaplinski\u2019s poetry, Charles Taylor\u2019s, Bernard Williams\u2019, Nelson Goodman\u2019s, D. W. Hamlyn\u2019s, Roger Scruton\u2019s, William James\u2019, Michael Walzer\u2019s, Richard Rorty\u2019s, Simon Blackburn\u2019s, David Hume\u2019s, Thomas Nagel\u2019s, Ernest Nagel\u2019s and James R. Newman\u2019s philosophical works and Edwin A. Abbott\u2019s novel Flatland. V\u00e4ljataga has also published scholarly articles, literary criticism and essays.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">He has received the Order of the White Star, class V (2001), the scholarship Ela ja s\u00e4ra (\u2018Live and Shine\u2019) (2012), the Locomotive of Culture honorary title of the newspaper <em>Postimees<\/em> for organising the publication of the Avatud Eesti Raamat (\u2018Open Estonia Book\u2019) series and editing the journal <em>Vikerkaar<\/em> (2009), Tallinn University Literary Award for the translations of Vladimir Nabokov\u2019s short stories The Vane Sisters and Signs and Symbols (2012), Literature Endowment Annual Award for the translation of Wystan Hugh Auden\u2019s <em>39 luuletust ja 5 esseed<\/em> (\u201839 Poems and 5 Essays\u2019, 2012), <em>V\u00e4ike inglise luule antoloogia<\/em> (\u2018Small Anthology of English Poetry\u2019) and the poetry collection <em>Gladioolid<\/em> (\u2018Gladioli\u2019, 2018), the Ants Oras Criticism Award (2020) and the August Sang Poetry Translation Award for the translation of Philip Larkin\u2019s <em>Vers de soci\u00e9t\u00e9<\/em> (2021).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<em><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">A.
