Juhan Voolaid (born 13 April 1971) is a writer and municipal official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voolaid was born in Tartu and completed Tartu Secondary school No. 1. He has studied geography at the University of Tartu. Juhan Voolaid belongs to the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union since 2017. In 2021, he bore the title of the town writer of Tartu.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juhan Voolaid has written books since 2008. Voolaid is knowledgeable about his hometown Tartu and its history and writes in a manner that provides information about Tartu and is entertaining to read.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made his debut in 2008 with the science fiction book Erakordne info Maa elanikele<\/em> (\u2018Extraordinary Information for the Inhabitants of the Earth\u2019). Later, Voolaid concentrated on the theme of Tartu and memories. Sometimes, he broadens the geographical scope of his books and writes also about Tallinn and P\u00e4rnu. One of the main characters of the book Tartu 1971\u20131983. J\u00f5mpsika m\u00e4lestused<\/em> (\u2018Tartu 1971\u20131983. A Rascal\u2019s Memories\u2019, 2020) is the author in his boyhood. The other main character is the Soviet-time town of Tartu seen through the eyes of that boy. In addition to books about Tartu in the author\u2019s childhood, Juhan Voolaid has published three more books about Tartu: Hokim\u00e4ngija Tartu linnam\u00fc\u00fcril<\/em> (\u2018Hockey Player on the Town Wall of Tartu\u2019, 2014), Tartu \u00f5uduskaupmees<\/em> (\u2018Tartu Merchant of Horrors\u2019, 2016) and Tartu Jaani \u00fcrik ja elu m\u00f5tte r\u00e4pane saladus<\/em> (\u2018St John\u2019s Manuscript of Tartu and the Dirty Secret of the Meaning of Life\u2019, 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voolaid has also published a collection of short stories on sports topics, \u00dclikorvpalluri loomine<\/em> (\u2018The Creation of a World-Class Basketball Player\u2019, 2022), and Eesti t\u00e4nap\u00e4evased muinasjutud<\/em> (\u2018Contemporary Estonian Fairy-Tales\u2019, 2023), intended for all ages, in which the classic characters of Estonian fairy tales, Vanapagan, the wise wizard of Lapland etc., are set to live in the modern world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2012, Voolaid published the children\u2019s book Kullam\u00e4e lood<\/em> (\u2018Kullam\u00e4e Stories\u2019), which is based on his father\u2019s memories. Kommikoletis<\/em> (\u2018Candy Monster\u2019, 2022) mainly compiles children\u2019s stories published in the magazine T\u00e4heke<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
