About Carolina Pihelgas<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carolina Pihelgas <\/span>(b. 24. II 1986) is an Estonian poet, novelist and translator.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She graduated from the Gustav Adolf Gymnasium in Tallinn in 2004. From 2006 to 2010 she studied for her Baccalaureat in theology at the University of Tartu, and thereafter continued with a master\u2019s degree in the anthropology of religion, graduating in 2012. From 2011 to 2020 Pihelgas worked in the Tartu offices of the youth literary journal V\u00e4rske R\u00f5hk<\/i>, becoming editor in chief in 2013. From 2021 she is working in the journal Looming<\/em>, first as an editor, then, since 2026 as an editor-in-chief. <\/i>Among other things she has conducted a number of interviews with contemporary Estonian poets, and collected them in the book S\u00f5nad on \u00f5hk <\/i>(\u2018Words are Air\u2019, 2018).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pihelgas\u2019 first two poetry collections are lyrical and express the emotional life of the poetic first person and immediate experiences from her environment. Later there are changes to her writing style, but some traits are characteristic of Pihelgas\u2019 work throughout all her collections: predominantly free-verse texts, with an important place for still-life and dream situations, physical experiences and the writer\u2019s engagement with surrounding space. The texts may also take up a social viewpoint, but that does not become dominant. The consistency of Pihelgas\u2019 poetry collections is steadily strengthening.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marked changes took place in Pihelgas\u2019 third book \u00d5nnekangestus <\/i>(\u2018Numb with Happiness\u2019, 2011), in which the intertextual connections are more numerous. Her relationship with the textual environment \u2013 especially with 20th<\/sup>\u2013 and 21st<\/sup>-century poetry \u2013 remains characteristic of Pihelgas\u2019 work later too. From \u00d5nnekangestus <\/i>onwards, reflecting in verse form on her own linguistic activity becomes more important for the poet. In some ways this is emphasised in Pihelgas\u2019 collection of prose poems Valgus kivi sees <\/i>(\u2018Light Inside a Stone\u2019, 2019). This is a deliberately formed whole, in which the problems of both personal and collective memory are prominent. The treatment of memory is found in Pihelgas\u2019 earlier books as well; here it has become the main theme of the collection. The initial impulse for the author was personal memories of childhood, but turning to the past also means family history, and at the same time reflections on a mythical past. In the collection Valgus kivi sees <\/i>there is no single central story, but there is more narrative here than in the earlier collections, and as a whole it creates a thematic and cognitive unity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> The collection Ikka veel<\/em> (\u2018Still\u2019, 2025) continues the intense and traumatic themes familiar from Pihelgas\u2019 novel The Cut Line (2024). Ikka veel<\/em> was awarded the Gustav Suits<\/a> Poetry Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pihelgas\u2019 first novel Vaadates \u00f6\u00f6d<\/em> (\u2018Watching the Night\u2019, 2022) deals with the relationship between a mother and daughter, the mother\u2019s attempts to learn more about her past, and the daughter\u2019s attempts to learn more about her mother and herself. The novel mainly moves in three spacetimes: the 1940s in Russia and the 1970s and 2000s in Estonia. The novel Vaadates \u00f6\u00f6d<\/em> has been compared to the prose of Ene Mihkelson<\/a>. The short novel L\u00f5ikejoon<\/em> (\u2018The Cut Line\u2019, 2024, in English in 2026) deals with intimate partner violence and, similarly to the first novel, behavioral patterns that carry over from the characters\u2019 childhood into adulthood. The novel received a lot of readership, recognition, and controversy; it won Pihelgas the first Estonian Women\u2019s Literature Award (2025). It has been translated into English, German and Finnish. Pihelgas\u2019 language when writing prose is poetic and idiosyncratic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pihelgas is one of the most remarkable translators of poetry in present-day Estonia. She has done translations from several languages and published them in books, the press and on the blog Luulet\u00f5lgendus<\/i> (\u2018Poetry interpretation\u2019), which she has run since 2010 with the poet Hasso Krull. Pihelgas\u2019 translations of works by Pablo Neruda, Tor Ulven, Konstantinos Kavafis, Nikola Medzirov and Ilya Kaminsky have appeared separately in books.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the book \u00d5nnekangestus <\/i>Pihelgas received the Gustav Suits poetry prize and for the book Valgus kivi sees <\/i>the Literature Endowment annual award. In 2020 she was awarded the title of Tartu City Writer and in the same year won the August Sang<\/a> prize for poetry translation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> In 2023, she received the Live and Shine scholarship from the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
