VIII 1969) is a writer and musician.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">He was born in Tallinn. From 1989 to 1995 he played bass guitar in the band Vennaskond; since 2002 he has been in the band S\u00f5pruse Puiestee. He also wrote the music for both bands. He has created lyrics for many Estonian bands, some of which have achieved nationwide popularity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Vaik\u2019s first book, <i>K\u00f5igil on alati \u00f5igus <\/i>(\u2018Everyone is Always Right\u2019, 2012) is a collection of poems and song lyrics. Vaik creates rhymed poetry, the subject matter of which is socially sensitive, serious and empathetic in its authorial stance.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Moving from song lyrics to prose brought Vaik almost immediate success. Both of his collections of stories, <i>T\u00f6\u00f6p\u00e4eva l\u00f5pp <\/i>(\u2018End of the Working Day\u2019, 2014) and <i>Meelparanduseta <\/i>(\u2018Unrepentant\u2019, 2016) were well received by the critics. The short story <i>Puhtus<\/i> (\u2018Purity\u2019), from the collection <i>T\u00f6\u00f6p\u00e4eva l\u00f5pp<\/i>, won the Friedebert Tuglas short story prize in 2015. The collection <i>Meeleparanduseta <\/i>won the Literature Endowment annual award in 2016. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Mait Vaik\u2019s first novel, <i>Kurvake s\u00fcgis<\/i> (\u2018Sad Autumn\u2019) appeared in 2018, and was nominated for the European Union literature prize in 2020. This book displays everything that is characteristic of Vaik\u2019s prose: a rather robust, but suggestive style, and an ability to look closely at complex subjects such as drug addiction, alcoholism or some other form of degeneracy, belief or the lack of it, failure in a success-driven society.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Mait Vaik has belonged to the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union since 2016.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\"><i>L.
