He attended schools in P\u00e4rnu and in Tallinn, and studied mathematics and Estonian philology at Tartu State University. He also did his postgraduate studies there. Sang\u2019s Candidate of Philology (currently PhD) thesis (1980) dealt with negation in Estonian. He has worked as a teacher, dramaturge at the Puppet Theatre and at the Language and Literature Institute. Sang has been an editor, e.g., of the journals <em>Looming<\/em>, <em>Vikerkaar<\/em> and <em>Keel ja Kirjandus<\/em> where he was chief editor from 2006\u20132016. He was the founder, manager and editor of the prestigious publishing company Vagabund (1991\u20132008). He is a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1984.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Sang made his debut in poetry in the yearbook <em>Suleproovid<\/em> (\u2018Trying One\u2019s Hand at Writing\u2019) in the mid-1960s. Together with <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/l\/toomasliiv\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/l\/toomasliiv\" title=\"\">Toomas Liiv<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000\">, <\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/v\/juhanviiding\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/v\/juhanviiding\" title=\"\">J\u00fcri \u00dcdi<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000\"> and <\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/i\/isotamm\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/i\/isotamm\" title=\"\">Johnny B. Isotamm<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">, he was one of the authors of the collection <em>N\u00e4rvitr\u00fckk<\/em> (\u2018Nerve Print\u2019, 1971), which has become a classic of Estonian literature. The collection <em>Ohvitseride maja<\/em> (\u2018Officers\u2019 Club\u2019, 2008) provides an overview of his poetry which is demanding in both form and content, and where grotesque and irony, inventiveness and playfulness of language, unexpected connections between words and meanings play an essential role. These features also characterise his poetry for children, e.g., the collection <em>Tulge eile meile!<\/em> (\u2018Come and Visit Us Yesterday\u2019, 2017).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Joel Sang has translated from Finnish (Pentti Saarikoski, Jan Blomstedt), Russian (Joseph Brodsky), Italian (Umberto Eco), French (Fran\u00e7ois Villon), English (Isaac Bashevis Singer, Harold Pinter, Leszek Ko\u0142akowski, Howard Pyle\u2019s \u2018The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood\u2019) and Swedish. He has written song lyrics and articles on linguistics, literary criticism and essays, which have also been published in collections, e.g., <em>M\u00e4ng versus \u00e4ng<\/em> (\u2018Play versus Anguish\u2019, 2020).
