IV 1943) is a poet and translator.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Ly Seppel was born in Haapsalu and attended Rapla secondary school from 1950 to 1961. She graduated from Tartu State University in 1967 in Estonian philology, and thereafter studied Turkic and Tatar languages in Baku and Moscow. Since 1972 she has been a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union. Since 1974 she has been a professional writer in Rapla. In her later years she has been active in psychology. Ly Seppel was married to the poet Andres Ehin (1940 \u2013 2011). Their daughter is the poet Kristiina Ehin (b. 1977).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Ly Seppel has written poetry and children\u2019s prose. Her debut volume, the poetry collection <i>Igal hommikul avan peo <\/i>(\u2018Every Morning I Open My Palm\u2019, 1965) appeared on the third cassette issues by the \u2018cassette generation\u2019. By her third collection, <i>Varjuring \u00fcmber tule <\/i>(\u2018Circle of Shadow Around the Fire\u2019, 1974, Juhan Smuul award 1975), Seppel\u2019s poetry had achieved maturity. In her poems, written mostly in free verse, the author seeks connections with her fellow humans, with traditions and the wider cultural arena, which would at the same time fix and transcend the limitations that are the human lot. Seppel\u2019s more recent poetry is collected in the volumes <i>Ajas\u00e4ra <\/i>(\u2018The Lustre of Time\u2019, 2003) and \u2018<span style=\"font-style:normal\">M\u00e4lujuur = <\/span>The Root of Memory\u2019 (2009, English translation by Ilmar Lehtpere).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">For the poem \u2018Eelkevadises metsas\u2019 (\u2018In the Pre-vernal Forest\u2019) Seppel won the Juhan Liiv poetry prize in 2004.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Seppel published the children\u2019s books <i>Kaarini ja Eeva raamat <\/i>(\u2018Kaarin\u2019s and Eva\u2019s Book\u2019, 1981) and <i>Unen\u00e4oraamat <\/i>(\u2018The Dream Book\u2019, 1984). They reveal a good knowledge of children\u2019s speech, children\u2019s ways of thinking and the world of imagination.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">She has translated numerous works of poetry and prose from Turkish, Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Kazakh, Turkmen, Tatar, Russian and Finnish. With Andres Ehin she translated (from Russian) a two-volume selection of Arabic tales, <i>Tuhat \u00fcks \u00f6\u00f6d <\/i>(\u2018The Thousand and One Nights\u2019, 1984).<i> <\/i> <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">In 2001 Seppel was awarded the Order of the White Star, class V. In 2007 Ly Seppel was awarded the Literature Endowment annual award for her translation into Estonia of the novel \u2018Snow\u2019 by the Nobel Prize-winning Turkish author Orhan Pamuk. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.28cm\">\n\t<em><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">L.
