I 1933 \u2013 8. III 2017) was a Russian poet and prose writer living in the Estonian SSR, and a prolific\u00a0translator of Estonian poetry.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">He was born in Leningrad into a Russian Jewish family. He attended the higher naval school. After graduating in 1955 he was directed into the service of the Baltic fleet. He worked on ships and at the Paldiski naval base. \u0160tein started writing romantic poems and lyrical prose, which was published in a naval newspaper, but soon also in Estonia\u2019s Russian-language press. His first poetry collection <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u041b\u0435\u0431\u0435\u0434\u044c-\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0432<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(\u2018Swan Island\u2019) appeared in Tallinn in 1966. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">After being released from military service in 1973, Boriss \u0160tein stayed on in Estonia. From 1972 he belonged to the Writers\u2019 Union of the USSR. He left Estonia in 1990 and settled in Moscow. From there he moved to Israel, where he died in 2017. His ties with Estonia remained: in 2016 his humorous and worldly-wise short stories appeared in the Russian-language journal <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u0422\u0430\u043b\u043b\u0438\u043d\u043d<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">While living in Estonia, Boriss \u0160tein held very diverse jobs: he was a forestry worker, a stevedore, an elephant keeper in a zoo, a dramaturge\u00a0in a theatre and one of the editors of the literary journal <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u0420\u0430\u0434\u0443\u0433\u0430<\/span><\/i>. From 1973 to 1983, with intervals, \u0160tein worked as a consultant to the Russian section of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union. He was a close associate of the famous novelist Sergei Dovlatov, who lived in Estonia and who used \u0160tein as a prototype in one of his works.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">\u0160tein\u2019s early poetry is characterised by the romance of the sea, optimism and a sense of harmony and of humour. His later poems are more thoughtful, reflecting the contradictions of life. Some of his lyrics are inspired by the Old Town of Tallinn.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Boriss \u0160tein\u2019s work is diverse. In addition to poetry and short stories he wrote fairy-tales and one play, <i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u041b\u044e\u0434\u0438 \u0438 \u043f\u0442\u0438\u0446\u044b<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(\u2018People and Birds\u2019, 1978). In 1978 he produced a documentary description of everyday life on the construction site of the Baikal-Amur Highway, complemented with verses. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">\u0160tein translated poetry by Betti Alver, Henrik Adamson, Ernst Enno, Paul Haavaoks, Manivald Kesamaa, Juhan Liiv, Ellen Niit, Arvi Siig, Juhan Smuul and Mats Traat into Russian. He took part in compiling a collection by Estonian Russian-language poets.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">L.<\/span><\/i><i>\u00a0<\/i><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">P.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-style:italic\">\u00a0(Translated by C.
