II 1964) is a children\u2019s author and nature writer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\">He was born and educated in Tartu, and graduated in biology from the Tartu State University. He worked at the Institute of Zoology and Botany of the University of Tartu, on several journals, and directed the Tartu Children\u2019s Theatre. He is the organiser of the natural sciences after-school program for the high school students at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\">Nature, the relationship between man and nature, local, sometimes folklore-based subject matter and the relations between generations are at the centre of what P\u00fcttsepp has written for children. His works skilfully blend reality and the fabulous, presenting human, animal and puppet protagonists in a lively and warm way.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\">His first stories intended for children appeared in the nineties; the material for his first children\u2019s book, <i>Kunstniku Johannese kummalised lood <\/i>(\u2018The Strange Stories of Johannes the Artist\u2019, 1994) is taken from his own family background. Anni, a puppet from the Tartu Children\u2019s Theatre, who made a trip around the world with a travel company called Rolling Estonia, tells stories form different countries and people in the book <i>Anni r\u00e4nnuteel <\/i>(\u2018Anni\u2019s Travels\u2019, 2005). The reader meets Anni again in the <i>Toad t\u00e4is nukkude juttu <\/i>(\u2018Roomfuls of Doll Stories\u2019, 2011), at the centre of which are stories of one family\u2019s dolls.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\">The author\u2019s observations about nature are found for example in the book <i>49 aastaega <\/i>(\u201849 Seasons\u2019, 2003), about young animals and humans in <i>V\u00e4ikese hundi lood <\/i>(\u2018Stories of a Little Wolf\u2019, 2009, 1<sup>st<\/sup> place in the Knee-High Book competition (P\u00f5lvepikuraamatu konkurss)) and <i>Mustad linnud <\/i>(\u2018Black Birds\u2019, 2016, the Good Children\u2019s Book award), a narrative about various black-coloured birds. The continuous hubbub of contemporary urban life, frightening for children, is the subject of the book <i>Tsss\u2026 Kuula! <\/i>(\u2018Shhh\u2026 Listen!\u2019, 2013).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\">The central character of the book <i>Gibraltari laevakoerte \u00fching <\/i>(\u2018The Society of Gibraltar Ships\u2019 Dogs\u2019, 2015, 1<sup>st<\/sup> place in the \u2018My first book\u2019 children\u2019s story competition, Good Children\u2019s Book award, in 2016 also entered on the list of honourable mentions by IBBY \u2013 the International Board on Books for Young People), with its gripping narrative and colourful characters, is a fox-furred dog, who is not made to speak or behave like a human in other ways, as is usual in children\u2019s literature, but remains an animal, revealed through description. The work offers a lively insight into the inner life of a city and its animals.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><i>On kuu kui kuldne laev <\/i>(\u2018The Moon is Like a Golden Ship\u2019, 2020, third place in the \u2018My First Book\u2019 children\u2019s story competition, the Raisin of the Year Award, the Good Children\u2019s Book award, the Literature Endowment Annual Award, the Virumaa Literature Prize) touches on a hitherto rare subject in children\u2019s literature \u2013 the Estonians<font style=\"11pt\">\u2019 <\/font>escape across a stormy sea to Swedish exile in 1944. Tragic and difficult events are described in an assured way, from a child\u2019s viewpoint. The framework for the story is the retrospective narrative of a surviving woman on her childhood experiences.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\">Other works by P\u00fcttsepp have also won awards. For example, in 2002 the second-third prize in the Estonian Theatre Agency\u2019s competition for children\u2019s and young people\u2019s plays was won by <i>K\u00e4rt<\/i>; in 2017 the Clear Message award went to <i>Mina olen enda oma <\/i>(\u2018I Am My Own\u2019, 2017).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:100%\"><i>A.
