In the same year, the family moved to Estonia. In 1961, Kuik completed Puurmani Secondary School and thereafter worked at Kabala 8-year School as a teacher of physical education. After military service, he settled in Tallinn. From 1966\u20131968, he worked as a lighting technician on Estonian Television and from 1968\u20131970 as a puppeteer at Tallinnfilm film studio. In the early 1970s, Kuik studied film direction at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography under the supervision of professor and film director Mikhail Romm. In 1975, he graduated from the Institute <em>cum laude<\/em>. From 1975\u20131992, Kuik was a director and scriptwriter at Tallinnfilm studio, later he has made documentary films at Eesti Telefilm and other studios. Valentin Kuik was a member of the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union from 1997.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">In the second half of the 1980s, the journals Looming and Vikerkaar started to publish Valentin Kuik\u2019s stories and scripts with lively film-like scenes. Valentin Kuik\u2019s collection of short stories Gei\u0161a (\u2018Geisha\u2019, 1998) contains comical stories dealing with the paradoxes of freedom. The novel Poegade m\u00e4ss (\u2018Revolt of Sons\u2019, 1997, 1st prize at the novel competition) depicts a degrading hysterical actor. The characteristic features of the author\u2019s prose are plentiful associative connections and slowly opening subtext.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>L. P. (Translated by I.
