VII 1974) is a journalist and poet.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Raid was born and educated in Tallinn, including the Estonian Institute of Humanities. He has worked on several publications, and was the editor in chief of the journal <i>Kultuur ja Elu <\/i>(1997-1999) and of the journal <i>KesKus <\/i>from 1998. He has made programmes for radio and television. He has been a member of the Riigikogu (parliament) and of Tallinn City Council. He became a member of the Writers\u2019 Union in 2012. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">The first poetry collection by Raid, who is known chiefly as an active and independent public figure, <i>Maailmam\u00e4ng <\/i><span style=\"font-style:normal\">[\u2018World Game\u2019]<\/span>, appeared in 1991, and was followed by <i>H\u00f5ikelein <\/i>(\u2018Mourning Call\u2019, 1999), <i>Juku-Kalle Raid ja teisi luuletusi <\/i>(\u2018Juku-Kalle Raid and Other Poems\u2019, 2013). What is striking is his mastery of language, his word-play and playful language, and his sure control of form; in the latest collection a classical lyric poem emerges with the first-person narrator. Together with Jan Kaus, Kalju Kruusa and Fagira D. Morti he created the \u00d5igem Valem grouping, which published the collections <i>\u00d5igem Valem <\/i>(\u2018Righter Wronger\u2019, 2000) and <i>Enam V\u00e4hem <\/i>(\u2018More Less\u2019, 2003). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Working in parliament has provided the subject matter for the book <i>Eelarve. Friigikogu rahvuseepos <\/i>(\u2018The Budget. A Parlia-mental National Epic\u2019, 2013), which describes what it takes to get the budget approved. Under the pseudonym Ahto Muld he published <i>Loomade elu <\/i>(\u2018The Life of Animals\u2019, 2014), which has been described as a survey of nature, but at the same time it is an allegory about humanity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.11in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\">Raid has translated mainly from Russian, and published and edited, for example, Vaapo Vaher\u2019s collection of articles <i>Surmakuul ja seemnepurse <\/i>(\u2018Death Bullet and Ejaculation\u2019, 2002), Yelena Skulskaya\u2019s essay collection <i>Vene rulett <\/i>(\u2018Russian Roulette\u2019, 2002), and Kivisildnik\u2019s collection of articles <i>Null tolerants <\/i>(\u2018Zero Tolerance\u2019, 2004).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.08in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:108%\"><i>A.
