X\/29. IX 1917-7. XI 1998) was a translator.<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.21cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><font style=\"12pt\">She was born in Tallinn. She studied in Tallinn and Germanic and English philology in the University of Tartu. She worked as a teacher of English and German and at the State History Museum. She was arrested in 1945 and sent to prison camp, after which she was deported to Siberia. She returned to Estonia in 1954. She worked at the Fr. R. Kreutzwald State Library of the Estonian SSR (nowadays, the National Library of Estonia), later as a professional translator. She joined the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union in 1990. She was married to Jaan Kross (1920-2007) and is mother to linguist Kristiina Ross (born 1955). She was born in Tallinn and is buried in Tallinn Rahum\u00e4e cemetery.<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.21cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><font style=\"12pt\">Kross translated both older and newer literature from mainly English and German, for example <i>Klaasp\u00e4rlim\u00e4ng<\/i> (\u2018The Glass Bead Game\u2019) by Hermann Hesse, <i>Doktor Faustus <\/i>(\u2018Doctor Faustus\u2019) by Thomas Mann, <i>Impressum<\/i> by Hermann Kant, <i>D\u2019Urberville\u2019ide Tess <\/i>(\u2018Tess of the d\u2019Urbervilles\u2019) by Thomas Hardy, the novels by E. A. Poe, <i>Kaasaegne kom\u00f6\u00f6dia <\/i>(\u2018A Modern Comedy\u2019) by John Galsworthy and <i>V\u00f5rgu all<\/i> (\u2018Under the Net\u2019) by Irish Murdoch.<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.21cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><font style=\"12pt\">In magazines, Kross published stories, for example <i>Kosjas\u00f5it <\/i>(\u2018Trip to Propose\u2019, Looming, 1960), which won second prize in a 1959 short story competition. Her story <i>Suurteos <\/i>(\u2018Masterwork\u2019, Looming, 1962) won third place in a 1961 short story competition.<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:0.21cm\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><em><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><font style=\"12pt\">A.
