\n\tEvald Kruut (born 6 December 1927) is an emigre Estonian poet living in the USA.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHe was born at Valaste coastal village in Virumaa County. He began his education at Valaste primary school, from 1942 attended J\u00f5hvi Secondary School. During the war, the family fled to Germany where Evald Kruut completed Lingen Estonian Gymnasium in 1949.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 1950, Kruut went to the US where he acquired higher education in the state of Minnesota. First, he studied languages and theology at Macalester College in St. Paul. He was interested in Greek and Hebrew. In 1954, Kruut graduated from the University of Minnesota with a master\u2019s degree. He studied linguistics and bibliography; during his studies he was interested in Anglo-Saxon and Sumerian languages. For thirteen years, Kruut worked for Dow Corning, a multinational corporation, where he founded a research library and information centre. From 1973\u20131991, Kruut worked as director of Veterans Memorial Library in Michingan. Now he lives in California.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tKruut has self-published two collections of poetry: Arrival and Departure. Twenty poems (2005) and Elu see v\u00f5rratu kangas. Poeesia l\u00e4bi aegade<\/em> (\u2018Life, This Incomparable Fabric. Poetry Throughout Times\u2019, 2006). The characteristic features of his poems are soul searching and fear of the future. Elu see v\u00f5rratu kangas consists of five cycles: S\u00f5dur ja pagulane<\/em> (\u2018Soldier and Refugee\u2019), Kevadetunnetus<\/em> (\u2018Springtime Feeling\u2019), Afrodite tempel<\/em> (\u2018Aphrodite\u2019s Temple\u2019), Mu Maarjamaa<\/em> (\u2018My Land of St. Mary\u2019) and H\u00fcmn Loojale<\/em> (\u2018Hymn to the Creator\u2019). His writing seems like pouring out the emotions burdening the soul, emancipation of the world of feelings from oppressive ballast. These are simple, understandable and honest thoughts arranged in verse. The collection contains two poems by other authors in Kruut\u2019s translation: Edna St. Vincent Millay\u2019s The Little Ghost has been translated from English and Mikhail Lermontov\u2019s Angel from Russian.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tKruut\u2019s collection in English, Arrival and Departure (2005), contains original poetry and translations from several languages. The translations were made in 1952\u20132004. One original poem has been written in German. The translated authors are M. Under, B. Alver, Fr. R. Kreutzwald, H. Hesse, H. Heine, V. Hugo, A. Akhmatova, V. Venevitinov.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n
