From 1912 to 1914 he lived in Estonia and Finland until he was mobilized into an officers’ course. He took part in the First World War and the War of Independence. Thereafter he lived as a writer in Tartu and Berlin, where he edited the journals Aeg and Euroopa Elu. In 1923 Roht settled permanently in Estonia. In 1928 he set up a settlers’ farm at Sangaste and began building a house. After his bankruptcy, Roht was charged with forging bonds and spent two years in prison. Released in 1932, he lived as a writer in Tallinn, and at the end of the nineteen-thirties he built a house at Aruküla, spending his summers mainly at Otepää. He died in Tallinn, and was buried in Metsakalmistu.

Roht made his debut in 1913 with a collection of short prose, Igavene labürint (‘The Eternal Labyrinth’). In the same period, together with the young poet Henrik Visnapuu, he established the Moment literary group, and published their anthologies. Roht became known, however, for his so-called ‘Kurgsoo’ series, which describes the efforts of the settlers in Võrumaa county to set up farms and their colourful village life in the novels Hümnid Paanile (‘Hymns to Pan’, 1992), Kurgsoo (1924), Maa (‘The Land’, 1927) and Aeg (‘Time’, 1929) and in the two stories Viimane kevad (‘The Last Spring’) and Kriuka Kusta armastus (‘The Love of Kriuka Kusta’) from the collection Neli juttu (‘Four Stories’, 1924). Regarded as one of Roht’s more enduring works is also the novel Elutee (‘A Career’), which appeared in 1938, and tells of an orphan boy’s course in becoming a city businessman, in addition giving an original, expert description of the wandering life of tinkers of Setu heritage. Also worthy of note are Roht’s ‘vacation novels’, Elu on ilus (‘Life is Beautiful’) and Kuldsed päevad (‘Golden Days’), which form a reportage on events in the life of a wanderer in Estonia. After the Second World War Roht published mainly children’s books, with engaging descriptions of the lives of animals. His children’s books have been reprinted several times and translated into Russian, Lithuanian, English and German.

A.
