XI 1911 \u2013 1. X 1988) was a literary scholar and novelist.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">He was born in Viru-Jaagupi parish in northeast Estonia, attending schools in Varudi, Pikaristi, S\u00e4mi and Kohala, as well as the Rakvere teachers\u2019 seminary. He worked in several places as a teacher, studying in the faculty of philosophy of the University of Tartu, from 1935, with an interval, completing his master\u2019s degree in 1943 (his dissertation was on \u201cFolklore in the work of A.H. Tammsaare\u201d). In 1944 he fled to Finland, and the next year went on to Sweden. From 1947 to 1952 he studied at Lund, and from 1962 to 1964 at the University of Turku (with a doctorate on \u201cThe historical novels of Eduard Vilde\u201d in 1964). Herbert Salu was, among other positions, lecturer in Estonian at the University of Turku and reader in Estonian literature at the universities of Lund and Tampere. He died in Lund, and was buried at the Northern Cemetery there.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Salu published poetry in the early thirties, and articles about literary history from the late thirties. There are also five biographical novels with a historical and cultural background. The novel <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u00d5nneraha <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Lucky Money\u2019, 1953) deals with the influence of the Swedish era on Estonian education, concentrating on one pupil of the famous Forselius seminary, Ignati Jaak. The fictional diary of K\u00e4su Hans, author of the lament for the town of Tartu, destroyed in the Great Northern War, <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Oh! Ma waene Tardo liin <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Ah Me! Poor Tartu Town!\u2019), is presented in <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Surmatrummid ja pajupill <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Death-drums and Wwillow-whistle\u2019, 1954). <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Talvepaleest Lubjasaarele <\/span><\/i>(\u2018From the Winter Palace to Lubjasaare\u2019, 1966) focuses on the first professional Estonian artist, Johann K\u00f6ler; incidents in the life of Reiner Brockmann, the author of the first known poem in Estonian, are portrayed on the novels <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Lasnam\u00e4e lamburid <\/span><\/i>(\u2018The Shepherds of Lasnam\u00e4e\u2019, 1978) and <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Siiditee serval<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(\u2018Alongside the Silk Road\u2019, 1986). <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Sembardia <\/span><\/i>(1996), which appeared posthumously, collects memories of Herbert Salu\u2019s youth and travelogues.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif;\">Studies of literature, largely of an essay-like nature, make up the collections <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Tuul \u00fcle mere <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Wind Over the Sea\u2019, 1965), <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Kauged rannad ja oma saar <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Distant Shores and the Native Island\u2019, 1970), <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Posthobusel J\u00f5hvist Rooma <\/span><\/i>(\u2018By Post-horse from J\u00f5hvi to Rome\u2019, 1974; H. Visnapuu Foundation prize 1975), <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Porkuni preili <\/span><\/i>(\u2018The Young Lady of Porkuni\u2019, 1978), <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Must lagi on meie toal <\/span><\/i>(\u2018Our Room has a Black Ceiling\u2019, 1980), <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Utoopia ja futuroloogia<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(\u2018Utopia and Futurology\u2019, 1972), <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Kihutav troika <\/span><\/i>(\u2018The Speedy Troika\u2019, 1984). Earlier Estonian literature is surveyed in <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Eesti vanem kirjandus <\/span><\/i>(\u2018The Older Literature of Estonia\u2019, 1953). Social problems in the works of Eduard Vilde are discussed in <i><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Kuhu p\u00e4ikene ei paista <\/span><\/i>(Where the Sun Doesn\u2019t Shine\u2019, 1981).
