XI 1879 – 21. VIII 1957) was a fiction writer, playwright and critic, who broadened the concept of social and historical novels in Estonia.

He was born the son of a farmer in Metsanuka village, Kärkna Parish, Tartu County. He studied in Orge village school, from 1895–1900 in Tartu county school, where he graduated a one-year pedagogy course. From 1902–1904, he worked as an administrative office worker, teacher and educator. From 1906, he worked as a journalist in Tallinn for Virulane, later for Tallinna Teataja. From 1917–1920, he worked as the editor in chief for Tallinna Teataja and from 1923–1924, for the magazine Agu. He was a leading member of the literature branch of the Estonian Non-formal Education Society. As a professional writer, he lived in Tallinn and was one of the initiators of the founding of the Estonian Writers’ Union and from 1920–1930, served as its chairman on several occasions. He became the honorary member of the Estonian Literary Society in 1932. He joined the left-wing and realist literary movement Kirjanduslik Orbiit (Literary Orbit) and from 1935–1937, worked as the culture editor of the newspaper Uus Eesti. From 1935–1936, he was the chairman of the Estonian Book Year committee; from 1938–1940, the chairman of the literature endowment of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia; and from 1939–1940, the chairman of the Tallinn Writers’ Society. In 1920, he traveled to Soviet Russia, next year to Germany and in 1928, he visited France. He was a freemason. In 1950, he fell out of favor in Soviet Estonia and was expelled from the Writers’ Union, after which he worked as a night watchman in Tallinn. He is buried in Metsakalmistu cemetery in Tallinn. A memorial plaque for him is on Wismari St 10 in Tallinn and a memorial stone in his birthplace.

In 1904, he started publishing short stories. He was interested in moral self-actualization, personal and social responsibility. He was moving towards critical realism, slowly becoming increasingly pessimistic, his influences coming from classic Russian literature, particularly L. Tolstoy. His first humorous stories were published in the collection Jumalalapsed (‘Children of God’, 1910). He analyzed the devastating effects of the petite bourgeoisie in the story Isamaa õilmed (The Blossoms of Fatherland, 1910). The novel Vahesaare Villem (‘Villem from Vahesaare’, 1909) had naturalist undertones and depicted a young farmer’s fight over his indebted homestead. The short novel Orjad (‘Slaves’, 1912) scolded the lack of principles in journalists; he returns to the same topic in the short story Epp (1919). The almost impressionistic story Toho-oja Anton (‘Anton of Toho-oja’, 1915) centered on elevated self-esteem, while the psychological novel Ennäe inimest! (‘Behold man!’, 1918) depicted the spiritual crisis of a businessman. The novel Taavet Soovere elu ja surm (‘Life and Death of Taavet Soovere’, 1922) described the tragicomedy of a sheltered dreamer and world improver.

The theater Estonia opened as a professional institution in 1906 with a staging of the play Päikese tõusul (‘Upon Sunrise’, manuscript lost) by Metsanurk. He also wrote the one act comedy Uues korteris (‘In the New Apartment’, 1908) and the dark comedy Vagade elu (‘Life of the Pious’, 1907/1924) that exposed the hypocrisy of the bigots. The play Põhjamaa (‘North Country’, 1915) was not staged because of protest from the bourgeois. The focal point of his dramas became the conflict between the red (socialists, bolsheviks) and the white faction (bourgeois, nationalists) that oftentimes pierces the family as well. Much like the protagonist of the story Jumalata (‘Godless’, 1921) who struggles to find an idea to die for in the midst of fighting, the protagonist of Kindrali poeg (‘Son of a General’, 1925) is also torn between revolution and the Bible – the latter play was prohibited in Vanemuine after the opening night due to the prototype being too recognizable. Jäljetu haud (‘Unmarked Grave’, 1926) that is a diary of an underground revolutionary, idealist and martyr struggling with internal conflict, also caused great controversy.

Metsanurk has approached expressionism, most notably in the story Algus (‘The Beginning’, 1924) that announced the doom of a world built on social injustice. The same themes are explored in the realist novel dilogy Valge pilv (‘White Cloud’, 1925) and Punane tuul (‘Red Wind’, 1928) that depict a village society during the dangerous time of revolutions, German occupation and the Independence War. In several of his works he criticizes status seekers and hedonism and praises honest work, he often presents cutting social issues. His most popular work became the historical novel Ümera jõel (‘On River Ümera’, 1934) that tried to realistically depict Estonian society during the ancient fight for independence and in the XIII century. In Soviet Estonia, the novel became compulsory school reading for many decades. His other historical novel Tuli tuha all (‘Fire under the Ashes’, 1939) tells the story of a famine at the end of the 17th century. In the novel Soosaare (1936) he autobiographically describes the hard country life in the last decades of the 19th century, yet also its creative aspects. Kutsutud ja seatud (‘Called and Initiated’, 1937) comes in the form of a pastor’s diary, which tells of his life crisis.

In 1940, the first year of Soviet occupation, Metsanurk published the story Vennad (‘Brothers’). He continued writing under German occupation and under the pen name Endel Paluteder, he published the story Kalmud metsas (‘Graves in the Forest’, 1942) which describes score-settling in a village. The story Dora Praats (1943) gives a satirical description of a female status seeker under the Soviet regime and Kuldaväärt poeg (‘Precious Son’, 1944) tells of country life. His attempt at imitating socialist realism in his village romance Suvine pööripäev (‘Summer Solstice’, 1957) failed, despite several later attempts at editing it. He began writing his memoir as well but only managed to finish Tee algul (‘Start of the Road’, 1946) that focuses on his younger years. The second part remained unfinished and was published in 2005 as Koolipoisist kirjanikuks (‘From Schoolboy to Writer’).

Valitud teosed I–V (‘Selected Works’ I–V, 1957–1980) represents the main body of his works. He had to rework several of his writings for them to be suitable for publishing under the Soviet occupation. In 2005, the story collection Kreeps (‘Shock’) was published. To this day, his numerous works of literary criticism remain uncollected. Metsanurk’s works have been translated into four languages, he himself has translated the works of U. Sinclair (1912), S. Sergeyev-Tsensky (1941–1948) and M. Gorky (1950).

A. M. (Translated by A.
