He studied zoology and semiotics at the University of Tartu and defended the doctoral thesis <em>Mimikri kui kommunikatsioonisemiootiline fenomen<\/em> (\u2018Mimicri as a communication semiotic phenomenon\u2019) in 2005. He has worked at the Estonian Institute and the Estonian Literary Museum. Maran is head of the Department of Semiotics and professor of ecosemiotics at the University of Tartu. He belongs to the literary grouping Erakkond, the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union (since 2008), the Estonian Literary Society, the Estonian Semiotics Society, the Estonian Naturalists\u2019 Society, the International Society for Biosemiotic Studies and the Nordic Association for Biosemiotic Studies. Maran has received the University of Tartu Badge of Distinction (2015). His father is the author of nature films Rein Maran.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Since his debut collection <em>P\u00f5hjavesi<\/em> (\u2018Groundwater\u2019, 2001), Maran\u2019s domain has been nature poetry. He is known for his pure and unfeigned relation to nature; his personal world is also intertwined with nature. His <em>Metsloomatruudus<\/em> (\u2018Wild Animal\u2019s Fidelity\u2019, 2019), which received the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><a data-url=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/s\/suits\" href=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/ewod\/s\/suits\" title=\"\">Gustav Suits<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"> Poetry Prize in 2020, has a philosophical undertone.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\">Along with treatises on natural science, he has published articles on nature literature, ecocriticism and ecosemiotics. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:13px\"><span style=\"font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif\"><em>A.
