Poetic Tartu: a guided walk in the town<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFive Moments in Lyrical Tartu\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:45 <\/strong>on October 1st<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To set the mood for the conference and to catch a glimpse of Tartu, a UNESCO City of Literature (https:\/\/tartu.kirjandus.ee\/<\/a>), everyone is invited to a short poetic walk through the city centre. A very small and rather arbitrary selection of poetry connected with Tartu will be read\u2014and maybe you\u2019ll even learn a thing or two along the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tour will be led by:
Kaisa Ling \u2013 Blues Broad, literary journalist, star alumna of the World Literature curriculum
Marja Unt \u2013 Tartu UNESCO City of Literature coordinator, literary producer, ordinary alumna of the Estonian Literature curriculum<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poetry in Languages \u2013 Poets of Tartu<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Join us for a special evening of poetry on October 2nd at 18:00<\/strong>, in Sulps bar on the Emaj\u00f5gi River in Tartu!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At \u201cPoetry in Languages: Poets of Tartu\u201d, you\u2019ll hear the works of six remarkable poets connected to the city: Carolina Pihelgas, Maarja P\u00e4rtna, J\u00fcri Kolk, Kristiina Ehin, Piret P\u00f5ldver, and T\u00f5nis Vilu. Their poems will also be presented in translation \u2014 not only in English but also in a beautiful array of smaller languages, including Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Finnish, German, Hungarian, and Norwegian. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This truly international gathering will feature readings by translators Adam Cullen, \u00d8yvind Rang\u00f8y, Agn\u0117 Bernotait\u0117, Kriszta T\u00f3th, Uta K\u00fchrt, and Katja Novak. The evening will be moderated by T\u00f5nis Vilu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music by Tidi will round off the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaleidoscope of World Poetry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The poetry evening \u201cKaleidoscope of World Poetry\u201d will give the attendants and participants of the conference a comfortable poetic setting to get acquainted and listen to each other\u2019s creative works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event takes place in the Tartu Literature House (Vanemuise 19) on October 3rd at<\/strong> 17.30-19.00<\/strong> and features readings by Catalina Florescu, Ivars \u0160teinbergs, Nicholas Hauck, A. E. Stallings, Monica\u00a0Manolachi, Kateryna Botnar, Vjollca Osja, Brikena Smajli, J\u00fcri Talvet, Tanja Dimitrijevic, Maarja Kangro, Alecia McKenzie, \u00d8yvind Rang\u00f8y, Guntars Godins and Olha Povoroznyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tarsl\u00e4mm Poetry Slam<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TarSl\u00e4mm is a series of poetry slam nights in Tartu. For the eighth time in English! The poets will have 3 minutes to impress the audience and the shiniest performances will be recognized with prizes! All the courageous poets will be offered a glass of wine or juice by Vilde and Vine.

RULES: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Poets have 3 minutes (plus a 14-second grace period) to perform an original poem of their own in the 1st round and 2 minutes in the 2nd (if they have passed in the 2nd too).
    For each 15\u201d more, the poet is penalized with 0,5 points less from the total score.

  2. The poet may not use props, costumes or musical instruments.
    \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. We encourage the poets to perform their poems without reading from a paper or any device. The audience loves it! \ud83d\ude09
    \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Each poet should have prepared 2 poems (one 3 min and one 2 min long), in case he or she passes in the second round.
    <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. The judges are selected from the audience. We have 5 judges and the score should be between 0 -10. The higher and lower score are dropped and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Judges should pay attention on both, the poem and the performance, when they give the score to each poet, and without being influenced from the other judges.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Young voices in Estonian Poetry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The conference will end on October 4th <\/strong>with a poetry reading by the young poets of Estonian literature \u2013 in addition to farewell cake and coffee at the University Caf\u00e9 (\u00dclikooli 20), the event \u201cEstonian Youth voices in Poetry\u201d will take place (performers: Riste Sofie K\u00e4\u00e4r, Susanna Mett, Johanna Roos and Triinu Kree). \u201cEstonian Youth voices in Poetry\u201d invites six unique artists to tune into their inner monologue, to make the whispers and screams heard. You\u2019ll find the sounds where poetry meets performance, performance meets music and music meets poetry.
    The closing of the conference will begin at 17:00 <\/strong>and end at 19:00<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event delves into the significance of words in the current context, showcasing the work of both poets and translators who are shaping and mediating the Ukrainian literary landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Vytas Dek\u0161nys, Alessandro Achilli, Ir\u00f5na \u0160uvalova, Kateryna Novak-Botnar, Olha Povorozn\u00f5k, and Anna Verschik from Ukraine, Italia, Lithuania and Estonia will share their insights and creative expressions. The discussion will be moderated by Daniele Monticelli. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is an opportunity to engage with the voices of Ukrainian literature and the challenges of their linguistic and cultural mediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is special about translating Estonian poetry? This question will be addressed on October 4, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, in the Assembly Hall of the Main Building of the University of Tartu (\u00dclikooli 18), when highly respected translators of Estonian poetry into different languages will gather around the same table to discuss their experiences in the field.
