We continuedeveloping methodologies piloted under the EU Horizon eMOTIONALCities project.<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong><em>The life-course events and contexts as determinants for wellbeing.<\/em><\/strong><em> The research group works with IMO data (longitudinal registry and census data 1989-2024 of the total population of Estonia) in order to learn how the exposure to various socio-spatial contexts over the lifecourse affect personal wellbeing, social inequalities and segregation.<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong><em>The exclusions of the digital society and its effects on wellbeing.<\/em><\/strong><em> Under this research directions we cooperate with the team of smartESTrurality (PRG1919) project with the aim to build a wider research network among the EstWell researchers for studying the emerging inequalities digital society. The current focus of our research team is on the elderly population and rural regions. However, the wider aim is to understand how to create an inclusive and spatially just digital society.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong><em>Creating the methodology, preparing and launching the common LongEstWell study (EstWell longitudinal data collection combining regular survey and longitudinal registry data)<\/em><\/strong><em> (coordinated by Mare Ainsaar). The LongEstwell study is supposed to bring together all EstWell research groups and their longitudinal data needs.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Key competencies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EstWell sociospatial context research group cosists of scientists representing multiple distciplines, such as human geography, urban geography, regional development, urban and regional planning, urban sociology, rural sociology, wellbeing research, social innovation, environmental sociology and environmental psychology, mobility studies, and others. We explore what people do online and with technology to create, monitor, and maintain well-being (so-called digitally enriched self-care); how social media communities and discourses shape people\u2019s perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors regarding well-being. We develop and test new services and programs aimed at delaying diseases or risky behaviors, particularly automated and personalized digital services. Our research explores questions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How frequently should reminders be sent to individuals?<\/li>\n<li>What communication methods are most effective for encouraging behavior change?<\/li>\n<li>How to balance fear-inducing and calming messages to motivate action effectively?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We evaluate the impact of these services, implement them, and design interventions to increase their adoption. We utilize data from large biobanks, particularly the Estonian Biobank (N=212,000). In 2021, we conducted Estonia\u2019s largest mental health and well-being survey, collecting detailed data on psychiatric symptoms and risk and protective factors from over 86,000 participants (about 10% of Estonia\u2019s population).<\/p>\n<p>Our research integrates various large datasets, including survey data, longitudinal electronic health records, genomic data, and metabolomic data. We apply diverse genetic epidemiology methods, such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS), polygenic scores, genetic correlations, and Mendelian randomization.
