They interviewed <strong>Lutsi language rememberer Bro\u0146islava Zambere<\/strong> at her home in the historical <strong>Lutsi village of M\u00e4gize (Barisi)<\/strong> and visited other areas of historical and linguistic interest relating to the Lutsi and broader South Estonian presence in this part of Latvia. Balodis had worked with Zambere previously and her memories also appear in Balodis\u2019s Lutsi language primer <em><a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ludza\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ludza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lutsi kiele lementar. Their co-author for the presentation was University of Latvia Livonian Institute director Valts Ern\u0161treits. O\u2019Rourke\u2019s opponent was Uppsala University professor Rogier Blokland and his dissertation supervisors were Karl Pajusalu and Santeri Junttila. The seminar took place at the Kihnu Community Centre and Kihnu Museum. Karl Pajusalu and the other organizer of this joint conference \u2013 P\u0113teris Vanags (Stockholm University) \u2013 presented a detailed overview in the presentation \u201c500 years of Estonian and Latvian written languages: similarities and differences\u201d. Karl Pajusalu also gave the presentation \u201cRegionality in Old Written Estonian\u201d, while project researcher Uldis Balodis gave the presentation \u201cWriting Lutsi and other Finnic varieties of Latvia\u201d. The working group was updating its members on progress towards the completion of a Livonian reference grammar. During these days, Uldis Balodis, Tuuli Tuisk, Miina Norvik, Karl Pajusalu, and other members of the working group also conducted <strong>interviews and fieldwork with Livonian community members<\/strong> in the historical Livonian villages on the Livonian Coast. <strong>fieldwork in Rozumegi village<\/strong> and homestead (\u0160\u0137ilb\u0113ni parish, Balvi Municipality, Latvia), which is at the center of a cluster of Estonian-like place names in NE Latvia, which are not associated with any known historic community of Estonian speakers in this area. The working group invited three colleagues from Latvia \u2013 <strong>Lidija Leikuma<\/strong> (University of Latvia), <strong>Dace Markus<\/strong> (Liep\u0101ja University), <strong>Anna Stafecka<\/strong> (University of Latvia) \u2013 who are experts on Latgalian, Malenian, and the subdialect features of Latvian. The first day of the seminar was run by project member Uldis Balodis who presented an overview of the history of the Finnic languages in Latvia in his presentation \u201cFinnic language history and contacts in Latvia\u201d. This was followed by the presentations given by the Latvian colleagues on their areas of expertise \u2013 \u201cPossible Finnic influence in Latvian subdialects\u201d (<em>Iesp\u0113jam\u0101s somugru valodu p\u0113das latvie\u0161u valodas izloksn\u0113s<\/em>) (Anna Stafecka), \u201cMalenians and Estonians: Language and life\u201d (<em>Mal\u0113nie\u0161i un igau\u0146i: valoda un sadz\u012bve<\/em>) (Dace Markus), \u201cThe main phonetic and morphological characteristics of Latgalian\u201d (<em>Latgalie\u0161u valodas galven\u0101s iez\u012bmes fon\u0113tik\u0101 un morfolo\u0123ij\u0101<\/em>) (Lidija Leikuma). The participants and presenters included project team members Karl Pajusalu, Helle Metslang, Eva Saar, Pire Teras as well as colleagues from the Estonian National Museum (Indrek J\u00e4\u00e4ts), the University of Latvia (Lidija Leikuma), and Liep\u0101ja University (Dace Markus). The Lutsi seminar continued a tradition of bringing together scholars of topics relating to Lutsi and South Estonian in general as well as connecting these topics to local history and Latgalian language. meeting on Ruhnu Island in the Gulf of R\u012bga led by University of Tartu Associate Professor of Swedish Language Eva Liina Asu-Garcia who is leading a two-year project to catalogue existing <strong>Ruhnu Swedish documentation<\/strong> and make these materials available to Ruhnu Swedish descendants and current residents of Ruhnu. The meeting included not only the project group but also members of the Livonian and Ruhnu Swedish community, current Ruhnu residents as well as the University of Tartu, University of Latvia Livonian Institute, and the Ruhnu Culture Space (Ruhnu Kultuuriruum). This project has brought together specialists from many fields to study topics and advance research on Estonian origins and development.
