The Estonian Dialect Syntax project (EstDiaSyn) studies the morphosyntactic variation of Estonian dialects, using data from the electronic Corpus of Estonian Dialects. The project represents data-driven dialectology and is the first project in Estonian linguistics to apply both qualitative and quantitative research methods on dialect material.

The studies focus on geographical distribution and variation of frequent morphosyntactic phenomena. Aggregating over the different variation patterns gives us a new perspective and enables us to see differences and similarities between the dialects on a whole new level. The distribution of the dialects based on different morphosyntactic features differs partly from the traditional dialect division, which  only takes into account phonetic, morphophonological and/or lexical phenomena.

The project also puts a strong emphasis on visualizing the dialect data as visualization with modern techniques can be used as a powerful research tool.
