Lessons learnt in the efforts to support Ukrainian cultural heritage will be an added value to the cultural heritage community of experts as well as citizens, as more emphasis is given to participatory and citizen driven action.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>As mentioned in Unit 1, open innovation is about involving more public and private actors, entities, researchers and citizens in the process of generating innovative ideas and solutions. This spirit of inclusiveness and shared responsibility in tackling social issues and challenges can function as a catalyst in times of crisis and humanitarian aid. In the sub-units below, you will be introduced to outstanding <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>initiatives undertaken by academia that combine open innovation with digital technologies and citizens\u2019 engagement<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>4.1 The 4CH initiative<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 10pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>One of the most rapid and effective initiatives that has been carried out to safeguard Ukrainian cultural heritage is the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#202020\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>4CH \u2013 SUM (Save Ukrainian Monuments) initiative organised by the consortium of the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/www.4ch-project.eu\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.4ch-project.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#1155cc\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>4CH project<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#202020\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>. The 4CH project established a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/news\/european-competence-centre-cultural-heritage-creates-initiative-save-ukraine-monuments-sum\" href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/news\/european-competence-centre-cultural-heritage-creates-initiative-save-ukraine-monuments-sum\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#1155cc\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>European Competence Centre for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#202020\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span> in January 2021.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 10pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#202020\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>In order to provide immediate assistance to the Ukrainian cultural sector, the 4CH consortium has accepted <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#202020\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>datasets<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#202020\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span> from researchers, cultural heritage institutions, museums, archives, libraries, companies and individuals in Ukraine and placed them in a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#202020\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>secure digital repository<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span style=\"color:#202020\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span> in Europe. The team comprises more than 1,300 cultural heritage professionals including librarians, archivists, researchers, and programmers, that come together (virtually) to archive \u201cat-risk [web]sites, digital content, and data in Ukrainian cultural heritage institutions while the country is under attack,\u201d according to their <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/www.sucho.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sucho.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a><span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 10pt\">\n\t<span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span>Volunteers can <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a data-url=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSc6KbhtEOI8zKsQmKT_waE1XlYEF1E6t-HzJ7Gc1EBfMvMg_A\/viewform\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSc6KbhtEOI8zKsQmKT_waE1XlYEF1E6t-HzJ7Gc1EBfMvMg_A\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up<\/a><span style=\"line-height:1.2\"><span><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span><span><span style=\"vertical-align:baseline\"><span> to help digitise important, historic, or otherwise unique documents, photos, and websites for posterity.
