Several data registers, portals and search engines find datasets in repositories based on the datasets\u2019 metadata.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tDataCite Search<br>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t<a data-url=\"https:\/\/datacite.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/datacite.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DataCite <\/a>is a non-profit organization that registers metadata of datasets and mints DOIs to datasets.<br>Major Estonian universities have formed the consortium <a data-url=\"https:\/\/datacite.ee\/en\/datacite-eesti-english\/\" href=\"https:\/\/datacite.ee\/en\/datacite-eesti-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DataCite Estonia<\/a>\u00a0in order to offer this service to their researchers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTo search the DataCite registry start from the <a data-url=\"https:\/\/commons.datacite.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/commons.datacite.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DataCite Commons<\/a>\u00a0page:\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1395\" height=\"240\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/dc_commons.png\" title=\"dc_commons.png\" alt=\"DC Commons\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/dc_commons.png 1395w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/dc_commons-300x52.png 300w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/dc_commons-1024x176.png 1024w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/dc_commons-768x132.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1395px) 100vw, 1395px\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe search terms include the metadata\u00a0required by the DataCite Metadata Framework: author, title, keywords, and so on.<br>The mandatory, recommended and optional metadata used at DataCite can be found on the website of the <a data-url=\"https:\/\/datacite.ee\/en\/for-scientists\/\" href=\"https:\/\/datacite.ee\/en\/for-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">DataCite Estonia consortium<\/a>.<br>Currently, the DataCite register contains more than 36\u00a0million different units, almost 2,4 million\u00a0of which are authored by Estonian scientists. The largest contribution has been made by the data management platform PlutoF.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis registry has some very good features:<br>1. From the beginning of 2020, the DataCite register gives the number of times the dataset\u00a0has been cited, viewed and downloaded. It should be noted that past activities are not reflected, so an accurate overview of the use of the dataset is only available from 2020 onwards.<br>2. It is easy\u00a0to cite\u00a0 the dataset in eight common formats, which can be immediately copied from the register.<br>3. DataCite provides the <a data-url=\"https:\/\/citation.crosscite.org\/\" href=\"https:\/\/citation.crosscite.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Citation Formatter<\/a>, where more than 5,000 standard references can be created by copying a DOI.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tExample: Let\u2019s look for data published by UT researcher Maarja \u00d6pik:<br>\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1391\" height=\"841\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/maarja_andmed.png\" title=\"maarja_andmed.png\" alt=\"Maarja Dataset\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/maarja_andmed.png 1391w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/maarja_andmed-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/maarja_andmed-1024x619.png 1024w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/maarja_andmed-768x464.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1391px) 100vw, 1391px\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe search results show that the database has been\u00a0<strong>cited once, viewed 175\u00a0times and downloaded 24\u00a0times<\/strong>. DOI takes the into the Dryad repository to the dataset\u00a0and can be cited in several formats.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tOpenAIRE EXPLORE<br>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n\tAnother place to search for data as well as for publications is the <a data-url=\"https:\/\/www.openaire.eu\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.openaire.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAIRE portal<\/a>. OpenAIRE is a long-term project of the European Commission, which brings together and links the results of research projects funded by the Commission.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTo search the portal for\u00a0publications and linked open data, you need to open <a data-url=\"https:\/\/explore.openaire.eu\/\" href=\"https:\/\/explore.openaire.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAIRE Explore<\/a>. In the search box\u00a0you can select\u00a0publications, data, software, organizations, projects\u00a0or funders.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1233\" height=\"257\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture15.png\" title=\"capture15.png\" alt=\"Explore\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture15.png 1233w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture15-300x63.png 300w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture15-1024x213.png 1024w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture15-768x160.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1233px) 100vw, 1233px\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Let\u2019s search this register\u00a0by the author R\u00e4mmer<\/strong> and we can see that the research data of the UT researcher is in two different data repositories but findable in OpenAIRE portal.\u00a0The reason may be that EC-funded projects are collaborative projects, involving researchers from many countries, so the data is stored in a repository approved by all project partners. The company is owned by the academic publishing house Elsevier.<br><strong>Mendeley Data is a service for researchers to\u00a0store their research data and search data across many registers.<\/strong><br>Mendeley Data Search covers the DataCite, OpenAIRE, etc. registers mentioned above, but the advantage of Mendeley Data is that it also searches the contents of the data files in their own Mendeley repository, not just the metadata.<br>At the moment, Mendeley Data Search seems to be the most practical search environment, although there are few filtering options. The data types are very clear.<br>Search results cannot be sorted by year, but the year number can be added into the search box.<br><strong>The logic is exactly the same as for other registers: you have to find the dataset\u00a0and go to the repository to access and download the data.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Mendeley allows a combined search of data by the following characteristics:<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tAUTHOR()\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAUTHOR_ID (Mendeley User ID, Scopus User ID, ORCID and all user IDs supported by DataCite)\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTITLE()\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tINSTITUTION()\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tINSTITUTION_ID() (Scopus Institution ID, Scival Institution ID, Mendeley Institution ID)\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tID()\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tDOI()\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tKEYWORDS\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tSUBJECT_AREA\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tIS_SUPPLEMENT_TO\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Boolean operators <\/strong>AND, OR, NOT, \u201cquotation marks\u201d and parentheses () are also possible, but operators inside parentheses may not work.<br>Example: we are looking for Maarja Kruusmaa\u2019s research data on glacial hydrology: Kruusmaa AND \u201cglacial hydrology\u201d. There are two results that lead to the Zenodo repository.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1308\" height=\"865\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22\" src=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture17.png\" title=\"capture17.png\" alt=\"Kruusmaa\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture17.png 1308w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture17-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture17-1024x677.png 1024w, https:\/\/sisu.ut.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/487\/capture17-768x508.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1308px) 100vw, 1308px\">\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tGoogle Dataset\u00a0Search<br>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n\tGoogle is developing a dataset\u00a0search engine and <a data-url=\"https:\/\/datasetsearch.research.google.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/datasetsearch.research.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Dataset Search<\/a> is available from 2018. It is similar to the Google Scholar search engine and they are designed to complement each other. Currently, only a simple keyword search is possible, as well as filtering by data type.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tData Citation Index<br>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n\tSimilar to the Web of Science citation database, Clarivate has developed the Data Citation Index, which at the end of 2020 included more than 10 million datasets. This product has not been purchased for Estonian libraries at moment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Data registers enable direct dataset search, no need to find a repository at first.
