Unless the situation improves,\u00a0<span>Europe\u2019s long term capacity to innovate\u00a0<\/span>and to conduct high quality research could be\u00a0<span>at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">According to various reports and studies,\u00a0<span>school science teaching needs to be more engaging<\/span>, apply inquiry-based and problem solving methods and meet the interests of young people. Inquiry-based learning is a method which enables to pick up different kinds of subject matter knowledge through inquiry experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #4c89b1\">It has been shown that\u00a0inquiry-based science education\u00a0(IBSE) can\u00a0increase pupils\u2019 interest\u00a0in science<\/span><\/strong> and also\u00a0<span>motivates teachers<\/span>. Pupils describe inquiry-based learning as a fun way of learning exciting things without even noticing. There are numerous useful inquiry-based learning methods available, but these methods are\u00a0<span>not being widely implemented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Europe needs responsible, innovative scientists. To achieve this, learners should be encouraged to acquire inquiry skills at an early age. The Ark of Inquiry Project will\u00a0<span>target pupils 7 to 18 years of age.<\/span>\u00a0Through experiencing different inquiry-based activities, reading thought-provoking scientific publications and actively communicating on science-related topics at an early age, young people could develop a desire to choose a future career in science.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: #4c89b1\">We plan to promote and\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span><strong><span style=\"color: #4c89b1\">disseminate inquiry-based activities on a large scale<\/span><\/strong>,<\/span>\u00a0making them more easily and widely implemented in science education across Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<span>The Ark of Inquiry project<\/span>\u00a0aims to engage young people in science and responsible research topics as well as to let them acquire inquiry skills and experience the science process first-hand through various activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reading scientific publications;<\/li>\n<li>formulating problems, inquiry questions or hypotheses;<\/li>\n<li>planning and conducting observations or experiments;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>analysing collected data;<\/li>\n<li>making conclusions or generalisations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Europe is facing a troubling situation \u2013 young people have lost interest in science-related subjects and fewer pupils regard science as their future career field.
